Brake Shoe: Adjustments

The rear drum brakes, have self-adjusting shoe mechanisms that assure correct lining-to-drum clearances at all times. The automatic adjusters operate only when the brakes are applied as the vehicle is moving rearward. Although the brakes are self-adjusting, an initial adjustment is necessary after the brake shoes have been replaced, or when the length of the star wheel adjuster has been changed during some other service operation.

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove rear wheels and brake drums.
2. If parking brake cable is holding stops off edge of shoe webs, loosen parking brake cable adjustment. Make sure stops (16) on both parking brake levers (7) are against edges of webs on park brake shoes (8).
3. Measure drum inside diameter using J 21177-A.
4. Turn brake adjusting screw (15) to expand shoes to diameter obtained on outside caliper portion of tool J-21177 for both wheels.
5. Install brake drums, wheels and tires aligning marks made at removal and lower vehicle to floor.

NOTE:. Whenever rear drum brakes are serviced, the parking brake linkage cable at the equalizer must always be readjusted to prevent possible damage to brake shoes.

6. Adjust parking brake. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment. Adjustments
7. Apply and release service brake pedal 30-35 times with normal pedal force. Pause approximately one second between pedal applications.
8. Depress parking brake six ratchet clicks. Rear wheels should not rotate.
9. Release parking brake and check for free wheel rotation.
