1ST Gear, Selector Lever In Position D

In 1st gear, planetary train P0 is locked by C0 and FO, connecting the input shaft directly to the intermediate shaft.

F0 transmits power when drive is applied by the engine and C0 transmits power during engine braking.

Both planetary trains P1 and P2 transmit power together, torque is divided between them.

Clutch C1 is engaged and transmits power from the input shaft, through the intermediate shaft, to the P1 ring gear.
The ring gear forces the P1 planets to rotate on their own shafts, causing the P1 planet carrier, which is permanently mounted on the output shaft, to rotate clockwise.

The P1 planets also drive the sun wheel shaft counterclockwise at a speed determined by planetary train P2.

The rear planet carrier (P2) is prevented from rotating counterclockwise by the freewheel F2, causing the sun wheel to drive the ring gear via the planet.

The ring gear which, like the P1 planet carrier, is mounted permanently on the output shaft, rotates clockwise.
Thus the power is transmitted jointly by the two planetary trains, P1 and P2, at a ratio of 2.804:1 in the AW 30-40.
