Sealing Flange, Belt Pulley Side

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Spur belt spreading (3099)

• Assembly tool (T10053)

• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)

• Silicone sealant (D 176 404 A2)

• Hand drill with plastic brush attachment (commercially available)

• Flat scraper (commercially available)

Removing

- Toothed belt, removing => [ Toothed Belt ] Toothed Belt.

- Remove toothed belt crankshaft sprocket. To do so, secure toothed belt gear using spur belt spreading (3099).





• When fastening the counter support, place two washers between the toothed belt gear and counter support.

- Drain engine oil.

- Remove oil pan => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan.

- Unscrew sealing flange on belt pulley side

- Remove the sealing flange, if necessary loosen by applying light strikes with a rubber hammer.

- Drive out sealing ring with the sealing flange removed.

- Remove sealant residue from cylinder block with a flat scraper.

- Remove sealant residue from sealing flange using a rotating plastic brush (wear safety glasses).





- Clean sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.

Installing

• Note the expiration date of the sealing compound.

• The sealing flange must be installed within 5 minutes after application of silicone sealant.

- Before installing, remove oil remains from end of crankshaft with a clean cloth.

- Cut tube nozzle at front marking (nozzle dia. approximately 3 mm).





- Apply silicone sealant as illustrated to the clean sealing surface of the sealing flange.





• Thickness of sealant bead - arrow -: 2 to 3 mm

• The sealing compound bead must not be thicker, otherwise excess sealing compound could enter the oil pan and may block the oil suction pipe strainer. Likewise, it could drip onto the sealing surface of the crankshaft seal.

• Cover sealing surface of sealing ring using a clean cloth before applying sealant bead.

- Set the sealing flange in place immediately and lightly tighten the bolts.

- Fasten the sealing flange bolts in a diagonal sequence.

Tightening specification: 15 Nm

- Install a new sealing ring => [ Crankshaft Seal, Belt Pulley Side ] Service and Repair.

- Install oil pan => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan.

• After installing, allow sealant to dry for approximately 30 minutes. Only after then may the engine oil be replenished.

- Toothed belt, installing => [ Toothed Belt ] Toothed Belt.
