Valve Cover: Service and Repair






Cylinder Head Cover

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Sealant, black (AMV 174 004 01)

Removing

- Remove engine cover.

One Piece Engine cover





Pull the one piece front engine cover - arrows A - upward with a quick jerk and then pull the lower mount - arrow B - forward.

Two Piece Engine Cover





On the two piece engine cover, first pull the outer cover upward with a quick jerk - arrows in the upper illustration -, then pull the inner engine cover upward with a quick jerk - arrows in lower illustration -.

- Remove upper part of toothed belt cover.

- Remove the crankcase ventilation bleeder hose on the cylinder head cover.

- Unbolt bracket on exhaust gas recirculation valve.

- Unbolt the cylinder head cover.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order. When doing this note the following:

Replace gasket for bolts if damaged.

- Coat both edges on the front bearing cap/cylinder head sealing surfaces with a drop sealant, black (AMV 174 004 01) (diameter approximately 5 mm) - arrows -.





- Coat both edges on the rear bearing cap/cylinder head sealing surfaces with a drop sealant, black (AMV 174 004 01) (diameter approximately 5 mm) - arrows -.





- Hand tighten the cylinder head cover bolts in sequence - 1 to 13 -.





- Tighten the bolts in sequence - 1 to 13 - to 10 Nm.
