Evaporator Case: Service and Repair
Evaporator Housing, Removal and Installation
1 Instrument panel
• Remove/Install.
• Fire remove locking cable from lock housing if applicable.
2 Air intake grill
• With water tight seal
• Dust and pollen filter not available due to limited space.
3 Air intake grill clamp
4 Air distribution and evaporator housing
• Remove together with cables and controls
• Install so that cables are not kinked or sharply bent otherwise control knobs will be difficult to turn
5 Fresh Air Blower Series Resistance - N24
6 Fresh air/recirculating flap vacuum servo*
7 A/C evaporator temperature switch - E33
• Prevents evaporator from icing up
• Switches A/C clutch off at 34° F ± 2° F(1.1° C ± 1° C)
• Not needed on vehicles with variable displacement, self regulating compressors (these compressors will not allow evaporator temperatures to drop below freezing)
8 Fresh air blower V2
9 Right air duct
10 Air distribution duct
• to remove: first remove instrument panel
11 Center instrument panel insert
12 A/C switch - E35

• to remove, first remove center instrument panel insert -11-

17 Footwell air outlet
• Route steering lock housing locking cable on tunnel below footwell air outlet
18 Heater core
• When removing heater core, drain entire cooling system and refill with new coolant
19 Evaporator water drain valve
• To remove, pull from housing
• Install so that valve lip opening faces down
20 Connecting duct
21 A/C clutch relay - J44
• Stamped with production control number 53
REMOVAL
- Discharge A/C refrigerant system.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Remove instrument panel. Service and Repair
- Disconnect locking cable on steering lock housing (if applicable).
- Remove passenger side instrument panel support bracket.
- Remove refrigerant hoses from expansion valve.
- Drain engine coolant and remove hoses from heater core.
- Remove housing securing nuts on firewall in engine compartment.
- Remove air distribution/evaporator housing.
Installation
- Reverse procedure to install.
