Cooling System Drain & Fill
DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM:General:
- Always use genuine VW coolant and distilled water to avoid the formation of harmful deposits in the cooling system. Use of anti-freeze with phosphate solutions or tap water can be harmful to the cooling system.
- Do not reuse the coolant when replacing damaged engine parts. If coolant comes in contact with paint or bodywork, immediately rinse the area with water.
To Drain Cooling System:
Coolant Drain Location:
1. With the engine fully cold remove the expansion tank cap. Set the temperature control knob in the passenger compartment to full warm.
2. Place a drain pan beneath the coolant pump.
3. Working at the coolant pump, remove the retaining clip (1) from the connector pipe. Pull the connector pipe from the pump housing and disconnect the lower hose from the pump. Allow the coolant to drain.
4. Install the lower hose to the pump.
To Fill Cooling System:
Expansion Tank:
1. Using a coolant mixture of 50% anti-freeze and 50% distilled water, fill the expansion tank slowly so that air is allowed to escape. Install the expansion tank cap.
2. Run the engine and check for leaks. Allow the radiator cooling fan to cycle on at least once.
3. Recheck the coolant level when the engine has cooled.
NOTE: The coolant level should be at the MAX mark at operating temperature and between the MIN and MAX mark when cold. The final coolant level is best checked when the cooling system is fully cold.
COOLING SYSTEM CAPACITY:
6.5 liters (1.7 gal).
Cooling system bleed
- Slowly fill coolant expansion tank up to Max marking, then install expansion tank cap.
- Run engine until cooling fan comes On, then check coolant level.
- Coolant level should be slightly above Max mark with engine at normal operating temperature, and between Min and Max marks with engine cold.
- If necessary, add coolant to specified marking.
