Canister Purge Solenoid: Testing and Inspection




Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Solenoid Valve -N115-, Checking

Solenoid valve is open when no voltage is present.

Special tools and equipment







- Multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent)







- VAG1527B voltage tester

Checking voltage supply


NOTE: It is necessary to lift vehicle to check voltage supply and to check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve with a second technician.


- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Start engine and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01. Connecting scan tool and selecting Engine Control Module (ECM):

Select function XX



- Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04. Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Enter display group number XXX



- Press 0, 7 and 1 for the function "display group number 71", and then press Q to exit from input mode.

Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = display fields)

Test of EVAP system will be initiated. Indication in display field 4 shows which function of the diagnostic is currently active.







- Disconnect 2-pin connector -1 - from Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve -N115-.







- Connect VAG1527B voltage tester between terminal 1 (B+) and terminal 2 (GND) of connector. LED must light up.

If LED lights up:
- Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve -N115- electrically.

If LED does not light up:
- Press -> button.

Select function XX



- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End data transfer" function 06. Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.
- Locate and repair open circuit using wiring diagram:

Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve -N115- electrically







- Connect Multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) between terminals 1 and 2 of Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve -N115- for resistance measurement.
Specification: 23 to 26 Ohms.

If specified values are not obtained:
- Replace Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve -N115-.
