Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection

IGNITION COIL INSPECTION

NOTICE:"Cold" and "Hot" in the following sentences press the temperature of the coils themselves. Cold is from -10°C (140°F) to 50°C (122°F) and Hot is from 50°C (122°F) to 100°C (212°F).

1. Remove exhaust pipe heat insulator.
2. Disconnect ignition coil connector.
3. Disconnect high-tension cord.
4. Clean coil and check following:
(a) Check for cracks or damage.
(b) Check the terminals for carbon tracks.
(c) Check the high-tension cord hole for carbon deposits and corrosion.

5. Inspect primary coil resistance
Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals.

Primary coil resistance
(Cold): 0.36 - 0.55 ohm

Primary coil resistance
(Hot): 0.45 - 0.65 ohm

If the resistance is not as specified. replace the ignition coil.

6. Inspect secondary coil resistance
Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the positive (+) terminal and high-tension terminal.

Secondary coil resistance
(Cold): 9.0 - 15.4 K ohms

Secondary coil resistance
(Hot): 11.4 - 18.1 K ohms

If the resistance is not as specified, replace the ignition coil.
7. Reconnect high-tension cord.
8. Reconnect ignition coil connector.
9. Reinstall exhaust pipe heat insulator.
