The on-board diagnostics feature will alert the driver of engine malfunctions by switching on the "CHECK ENGINE" indicator located in the instrument cluster. Different malfunctions can be detected during a "SELF-TEST" (starting) or during normal operation. During the "SELF-TEST" the ECU checks itself for the ability to detect system malfunctions. After the engine has been started the ECU continually monitors each component for possible malfunctions. They are identified by coded signals flashed by the "CHECK ENGINE" indicator during a system "TEST" sequence. The memory can retain up to 5 faults. If more than 5 faults occur, minor faults will not be retained. Furthermore, minor faults will not cause the "CHECK ENGINE" indicator to illuminate
