4. Washer Does Not Work, Wipers Are OK

CIRCUIT OPERATION
A signal sent from the wiper switch turns on the relay, which is incorporated in the FRONT-ECU. This causes current to flow from the ignition switch to the washer motor through multi-purpose fuse number 8. Then the washer motor will operate.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (COMMENT)
The following component(s) may be faulty:
Connector; harness, the windshield washer motor, or the FRONT-ECU.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The most likely causes for this case:
- Malfunction of the FRONT-ECU
- Damaged wiring harness and connector
- Malfunction of the windshield washer motor

DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tool:
MB991502: Scan Tool (MUT-II)

CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991502, make sure that the ignition switch is "OFF" before connecting or disconnecting the scan tool.

STEP 1. Check the diagnostic trouble code.
Connect scan tool MB991502 to the data link connector, and then check the diagnostic trouble code.
If code number 11 is displayed on scan tool MB991502, replace the ETACS-ECU. Then go to Step 5.
If code number 12 is displayed on scan tool MB991502, replace the column switch. Then go to Step 5.
If code number 13 is displayed on scan tool MB991502, replace the FRONT-ECU. Then go to Step 5.

STEP 2. Check the windshield washer motor
1. With the washer motor installed to the washer tank, fill the washer tank with water.
2. Check that the water squirts out strongly when battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2.
If the washer motor is damaged, replace it. Then go to Step 5.
If the washer motor is not damaged, go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Check the harness wire between FRONT-ECU A-09X and windshield washer motor A-33.
1. Remove the FRONT-ECU.
2. Check the harness wire between FRONT-ECU A-09X and windshield washer motor A-33.
If the harness wire between FRONT-ECU A-09X windshield washer motor A-33 is damaged, repair it. Then go to Step 5.
If the harness wire between FRONT-ECU A-09X and windshield washer motor A-33 is not damaged, go to Step 4.

NOTE: After checking intermediate connector C-05, check the wire. If intermediate connector C-05 is damaged, repair or replace it. Refer to Harness Connector Inspection.
Then go to Step 5.

STEP 4. Check the harness wire between windshield washer motor A-33 and ground.
If the harness wire between windshield wiper motor and ground is damaged, repair it. Then go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Check symptoms.
Confirm that the harness wire, intermediate connector, windshield washer motor, FRONT-ECU and column switch are normal.
