DTC 22
CODE NO.22: INPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR SYSTEMCIRCUIT OPERATION
- A coil built into the input shaft speed sensor generates 0 - 5 volts pulse signal at both ends of this coil when the input shaft rotates. The pulse signal frequency increases with a rise in input shaft speed.
- Both ends of the coil are connected to the PCM (terminals 57 and 103) via the input shaft speed sensor connector (terminals 1 and 2).
- The PCM detects the input shaft speed by the signal input to terminal 103.
- The input shaft speed sensor generates the pulse signal as the holes in the under drive clutch drum pass the magnetic tip of the sensor.
DTC SET CONDITIONS
- If no output pulse is detected from the input shaft speed sensor for one second or more while driving in 3rd or 4th gear at a speed of 30 km/h (119 mph) or more, there is an open circuit or short-circuit in the input shaft speed sensor, diagnostic trouble code number "22" is output four times, the transaxle is locked into 3rd gear or 2nd gear as a fail-safe measure.
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The most likely causes for this code to be set:
- Malfunction of the input shaft speed sensor circuit
- Malfunction of the underdrive clutch retainer Damaged harness, connector
- Malfunction of the PCM
DIAGNOSIS
Required Special Tool: MB991502: Scan Tool (MUT-II)
CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991502, always turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool MB991502.
STEP 1. Using Scan Tool MB991502, Check Data List Item 22: Input Shaft Speed Sensor.
1. Connect scan tool MB991502 to the data link connector.
2. Start the engine. Move the selector lever to the "3" position.
3. Set scan tool MB991502 to the data reading mode for item 22, Input shaft speed sensor.
4. When driving at constant speed of 50 km/h (31 mph), the display should be:
- 1,600 - 1,900 r/min <2.4L Engine>
- 1,300 - 1,600 r/min <3.0L Engine>
If the input shaft speed sensor is operating properly, this malfunction may be intermittent. Refer to Diagnostic Strategies; General Electrical Troubleshooting.
If the input shaft speed sensor is not operating properly, go to Step 2.
STEP 2. Check The Input Shaft Speed Sensor.
1. Disconnect harness connector B-40 and measure at the sensor side.
2. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2.
Standard value: 270 - 330 Ohms
If at the standard value, go to Step 3.
If outside the standard value, replace the input shaft speed sensor. Recheck for DTCs.
STEP 3. Check The Power Supply Circuit At The Input Shaft Speed Sensor.
1. Disconnect harness connector B-40 and measure at the harness side.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
3. Measure the voltage between terminal 3 and ground.
- Voltage should be battery positive voltage.
If battery positive voltage, go to Step 4.
If not battery positive voltage, repair the wiring harness wires or the connector between the input shaft speed sensor and the ignition switch.
STEP 4. Check The Circuit At The Input Shaft Speed Sensor
1. Disconnect harness connector B-40 and measure at the harness side.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
3. Measure voltage between terminal 2 and ground.
- Voltage should be approximately 5 volts.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
5. Check for continuity between terminal 1 and ground.
- Should be less than 2 ohm.
If the checks above do not meet the specifications, repair the wiring harness wires or the connector between the input shaft speed sensor and the PCM.
If the checks above meet the specifications, go to Step 5.
STEP 5. Check Harness Connector B-40 At The Input Shaft Speed Sensor For Damage.
If harness connector B-40 is damaged, repair or replace it. Refer to Diagnostic Strategies; General Electrical Troubleshooting. Recheck for DTCs.
If harness connector B-40 is in good condition, go to Step 6.
STEP 6. Check Harness Connectors C-40 And C-42 At The PCM For Damage.
If harness connectors C-40 and C-42 are damaged, repair or replace them. Refer to Diagnostic Strategies; General Electrical Troubleshooting. Recheck for DTCs.
If harness connectors C-40 and C-42 are in good condition, go to Step 7.
STEP 7. Check The Harness Wires Between PCM Connectors C-40 And C-42 And Input Shaft Speed Sensor Connector B-40.
If any harness wires between PCM connectors C-40 and C-42 and input shaft speed sensor connector B-40 are damaged, repair them. Refer to Diagnostic Strategies; General Electrical Troubleshooting. Then check the malfunction.
It the harness wires are in good condition, go to Step 8.
STEP 8. Using An Oscilloscope, Check The Input Shaft Speed Sensor.
Required Special Tool: MB991709: Test Harness
1. Disconnect input shaft speed sensor connector B-40, and connect special tool MB991709 in between.
2. Connect the clip (for terminal 2 of connector B-40) of special tool MB991709 to an oscilloscope probe.
3. Start the engine and run at:
- 1,600 - 1,900 r/min <2.4L Engine>
- 1,300 - 1,600 r/min <3.0L Engine>
[Approximately 50 km/h (31 mph)].
Selector lever position should be "3."
4. Check the waveform.
- The waveform should show a normal pattern as shown in the illustration and at least 4.5 volts.
5. Turn off the engine.
If the waveform shows a normal pattern, recheck for DTCs.
If the malfunction is not eliminated, replace the PCM. On 2000 models, the immobilizer-ECU should be replaced together with it. Refer to Ignition Switch and Immobilizer System.
If the waveform does not show a normal pattern, go to Step 9.
STEP 9. Replace The Input Shaft Speed Sensor. Then Check The Malfunction.
Replace the input shaft speed sensor. Recheck for DTCs.
If a malfunction is eliminated, diagnosis is completed.
If the malfunction is not eliminated, go to Step 10.
STEP 10. Check The Underdrive Clutch Retainer.
If the underdrive clutch retainer is not defective, go to Step 11.
If the underdrive clutch retainer is defective, replace the underdrive clutch retainer. Refer to Underdrive Clutch and Input Shaft under the overhaul procedures. Recheck for DTCs.
STEP 11. Recheck for DTCS.
If the malfunction is eliminated, diagnosis is complete.
If the malfunction is not eliminated, eliminate the source of the noise.
