Pinpoint Test A: The Courtesy Lamps Do Not Illuminate With A Door Open
Refer to Wiring Diagrams Set 59, Multifunction Control Modules for schematic and connector information. Electrical Diagrams
Normal Operation
When any door is open, the door ajar switch closes and supplies a ground to the Generic Electronic Module (GEM). The GEM (Generic Electronic Module) monitors the ajar circuits, and based on the ajar status, the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) energizes the courtesy lamp relay, illuminating the courtesy lamps.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Door ajar switch
- GEM (Generic Electronic Module)
PINPOINT TEST A : THE COURTESY LAMP(S) DO NOT ILLUMINATE WITH A DOOR OPEN
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Before beginning diagnosis, make sure the front interior lamp control switch is in the DOOR position.
A1 CHECK THE COURTESY LAMP OPERATION FROM ALL DOORS
- Ignition OFF.
- Open all of the doors and observe the interior lamps?
Are the courtesy lamps illuminated?
Yes
GO to A2.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: The Courtesy Lamp(s) Are Inoperative
A2 BYPASS THE DOOR AJAR SWITCH
- Close all of the doors.
- Disconnect: Suspect Door Ajar Switch/Latch.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between the suspect door ajar switch, harness side as follows:
Suspect Door Ajar Switch Connector-Pin/ Circuit Connector-Pin/ Circuit LH front (manual locks) C3129-1 31S-GL9 (BK/YE) C3129-2 31-GL9 (BK) LH front (power locks) C525-8 31S-GL9 (BK/YE) C525-6 31-AA58 (BK) RH front (manual locks) C3141-1 31S-GL16 (BK/BU) C3141-2 31-GL16 (BK) RH front (power locks) C609-8 31S-GL16 (BK/BU) C609-6 31-GL16 (BK) LH sliding door C397-1 31S-GL12 (BK/OG) C397-2 31-GL12 (BK) RH sliding door C398-1 31S-GL19 (BK/GN) C398-2 31-GL19 (BK) Rear doors (manual locks) C4119-1 31S-GL56 (BK/WH) C4119-2 31-GL56 (BK) Rear doors (power locks) C4120-8 31S-GL20 (BK) C4120-6 31-GL20 (BK)
Do the courtesy lamps illuminate when the jumper wire is installed?
Yes
REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new door ajar switch or latch for the door in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No
REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to A3.
A3 BYPASS THE SUSPECT DOOR AJAR SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT
- Connect a fused jumper wire between the suspect door ajar switch, harness side and ground as follows:
Location Connector-Pin Circuit LH front (manual locks) C3129-1 31S-GL9 (BK/YE) LH front (power locks) C525-8 31S-GL9 (BK/YE) RH front (manual locks) C3141-1 31S-GL16 (BK/BU) RH front (power locks) C609-8 31S-GL16 (BK/BU) LH sliding door C397-1 31S-GL12 (BK/OG) RH sliding door C398-1 31S-GL19 (BK/GN) Rear doors (manual locks) C4119-1 31S-GL56 (BK/WH) Rear doors (power locks) C4120-8 31S-GL20 (BK)
Do the courtesy lamps illuminate when the jumper wire is installed?
Yes
REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR the suspect door ajar switch ground circuit in question for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No
REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to A4.
A4 CHECK THE DOOR AJAR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: GEM (Generic Electronic Module) C201E.
- Measure the resistance between the suspect door ajar switch, harness side and the GEM (Generic Electronic Module), harness side as follows:
Location Door Connector-Pin/ Circuit GEM (Generic Electronic Module) Connector-Pin/ Circuit LH front (manual locks) C3129-1 31S-GL9 (BK/YE) C201E-18 31S-GL9 (BK/YE) LH front (power locks) C525-8 31S-GL9 (BK/YE) C201E-18 31S-GL9 (BK/YE) RH front (manual locks) C3141-1 31S-GL16 (BK/BU) C201E-19 31S-GL16 (BK/BU) RH front (power locks) C609-8 31S-GL16 (BK/BU) C201E-19 31S-GL16 (BK/BU) LH sliding door C397-1 31S-GL12 (BK/OG) C201E-8 31S-AA17 (BK/WH) RH sliding door C398-1 31S-GL19 (BK/GN) C201E-8 31S-AA17 (BK/WH) Rear doors (manual locks) C4119-1 31S-GL56 (BK/WH) C201E-17 31S-GL56 (BK/WH) Rear doors (power locks) C4119-2 31S-GL20 (BK) C201E-17 31S-GL56 (BK/WH)
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to A5.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
A5 CHECK FOR CORRECT GEM (Generic Electronic Module) OPERATION
- Disconnect all the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new GEM (Generic Electronic Module). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
