Pinpoint Test I: The Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) Are On With The Ignition Switch Off

Normal Operation

When the ignition is in RUN, voltage is sent to the headlamp switch. When the headlamp switch is in the OFF position, voltage is routed to the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) relay coil. The Battery Junction Box (BJB) supplies battery voltage to the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay switch side. When the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay is energized, voltage is sent through a resistor wire to the low beam voltage supply circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay

- Headlamp switch

PINPOINT TEST I : THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) ARE ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF

I1 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.

Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?

Yes
GO to I2.

No
INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to Headlamp Switch . TEST the system for normal operation.

I2 CHECK THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) RELAY OUTPUT

- Disconnect: DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) Relay.

Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?

Yes
GO to I4.

No
GO to I3.

I3 CHECK THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) RELAY

- Substitute a known good relay.

Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?

Yes
REMOVE the known good relay. REPAIR circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REMOVE the known good relay. INSTALL a new DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

I4 CHECK THE LOW BEAM RELAY OUTPUT

- Disconnect: Low Beam Relay.

Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?

Yes
REPAIR the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) /low beam relay output circuit for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test E Pinpoint Test E: The Low Beams Are Always On.
