Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)

Pinpoint Test H: The Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) Are Inoperative

Normal Operation

When the ignition is in RUN, voltage is sent to the headlamp switch. When the headlamp switch is in the OFF position, voltage is routed to the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) relay coil. The Battery Junction Box (BJB) supplies battery voltage to the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay switch side. When the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay is energized, voltage is sent through a resistor wire to the low beam voltage supply circuit.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Fuse

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay

- Headlamp switch

PINPOINT TEST H : THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) ARE INOPERATIVE

H1 CHECK THE LOW BEAM OPERATION

- Ignition ON.

- Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position.

Do the headlamps illuminate?

Yes
GO to H2.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test A Pinpoint Test A: Both Low Beams Are Inoperative.

H2 CHECK THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) RELAY

- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect: DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) Relay.

- Substitute a known good relay.

- Ignition ON.

Do the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) illuminate?

Yes
REMOVE the known good relay. INSTALL a new DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REMOVE the known good relay. GO to H3.

H3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) RELAY SWITCH SIDE

- Ignition OFF.

- Measure the voltage between the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay pin 3, circuit 30-LE7 (RD), BJB (Battery Junction Box) face side and ground.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
GO to H4.

No
REPAIR circuit 30-LE7 (RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

H4 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) RELAY COIL

- Ignition ON.

- Measure the voltage between the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay pin 1, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), BJB (Battery Junction Box) face side and ground.

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
GO to H5.

No
GO to H6.

H5 BYPASS THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) RELAY

- Connect a fuse jumper wire between the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay pin 3, circuit 30-LE7 (RD), BJB (Battery Junction Box) face side and the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) relay pin 5, circuit 15S-LE8 (GN/RD), BJB (Battery Junction Box) face side.

Do the headlamps illuminate?

Yes
REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR circuit 15S-LE8 (GN/RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR the resistor wire for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

H6 BYPASS THE HEADLAMP SWITCH

- Ignition OFF.

- Connect: DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) Relay.

- Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.

- Connect a fused jumper wire between the headlamp switch C205-15, circuit 15-LE29 (GN/BK), harness side and the headlamp switch C205-4, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), harness side.

- Ignition ON.

Do the headlamps illuminate?

Yes
REMOVE the jumper wire. INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to Headlamp Switch . TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REMOVE the jumper wire. REPAIR circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
