Pinpoint Test V: The LH Or RH Turn Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
When the multifunction switch is in the LH or RH TURN position, a message is sent to the Instrument Cluster (IC) from the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) communication bus. The IC (Instrument Cluster), upon receipt of the LH or RH turn message, flashes the LH or RH turn signal indicator on and off.
If the LH or RH turn data is missing for less than 5 seconds, the LH or RH turn indicator remains in the last indication mode (on or off), based upon the last known good data message. If the LH or RH turn data is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) defaults the LH or RH indicator off.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Turn signal concern
- GEM (Generic Electronic Module)
- IC (Instrument Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST V : THE LH OR RH TURN INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
V1 CHECK THE LH OR RH TURN SIGNAL LAMPS OPERATION
- Operate the LH or RH turn signal. Observe the exterior LH or RH turn lamps.
Do the turn signal lamps operate correctly?
Yes
GO to V2.
No
REFER to Lighting and Horns.
V2 CARRY OUT THE IC (Instrument Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.
- Select the IC (Instrument Cluster) RH or LH turn signal indicator (RHTURN) or (LHTURN) active command. Command the RH or LH turn signal indicator on and off. Observe the LH or RH turn signal indicator.
Does the LH or RH turn signal indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to V3.
No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
V3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE GEM (Generic Electronic Module) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded GEM (Generic Electronic Module) DTCs from the self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart in Body Control Systems. Body Control Systems / Body Control Module
No
INSTALL a new GEM (Generic Electronic Module). TEST the system for normal operation.
