Pinpoint Test W: The Charge Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the charging system signal from the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. If the charging system is functioning correctly once the engine is started, the PCM sends the IC (Instrument Cluster) a message to turn off the charge indicator. When a charging system concern is detected, the PCM sends a message to the IC (Instrument Cluster) to turn on the charge message center warning indicator. If the charging system message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IC (Instrument Cluster) for greater than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0100 and defaults the charge message center warning ON.

NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the IC (Instrument Cluster) other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Charging system concern

- Message center concern

PINPOINT TEST W : THE CHARGE MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

W1 CHECK THE DOOR AJAR MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR

- Close all doors, liftgate and liftgate glass.

- Ignition ON.

- Open the driver door while monitoring the door ajar message center warning indicator.

Does the driver door ajar message center warning indicator turn off with the driver door closed and turn on with the driver door open?

Yes
GO to W2.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test A. Pinpoint Test A: The Instrument Cluster (IC) Is Inoperative

W2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.

Are any charging system DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Charging System.

No
GO to W3.

W3 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM

- Check the charging system operation.

Is the charging system operating correctly?

Yes
GO to W4.

No
REFER to Charging System.

W4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Is DTC U0100 recorded?

Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AT. Pinpoint Test AT: DTC U0100

No
INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
