Pinpoint Test M: The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) messages from the Smart Junction Box (SJB) over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) communication bus. If the SJB (Smart Junction Box) determines that the tire pressure has exceeded the limits, a message is sent to the IC (Instrument Cluster) to turn on the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator. If a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) fault condition exists, the SJB (Smart Junction Box) sends a message to the IC (Instrument Cluster) to flash the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator. If the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) status message is missing or deemed invalid by the IC (Instrument Cluster) for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0140 and flashes the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) indicator for 60 seconds then turns the indicator on.

NOTE: If DTC U0140 is set in the IC (Instrument Cluster), other symptoms may also be present such as high beam indicator, RH/LH turn indicators, instrument panel backlighting and door ajar indication.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Tire pressure

- TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) concern

- SJB (Smart Junction Box)

- IC (Instrument Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST M : THE TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

M1 CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE

- Verify that the tire pressure in all tires meets the recommended tire pressures on the vehicle certification label.

Do all the tires meet the recommended tire pressures?

Yes
GO to M2.

No
CORRECT the tire pressures. TEST the system for normal operation.

M2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Is DTC U0140 recorded?

Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AY. Pinpoint Test AY: DTC U0037 And U0140

No
GO to M3.

M3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded SJB (Smart Junction Box) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any SJB (Smart Junction Box) DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems for correct navigation of the DTC. Body Control Systems

No
GO to M4.

M4 CARRY OUT THE IC (Instrument Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.

- Select the IC (Instrument Cluster) TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) (TIRE_PRES) active command on and off. Observe the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator.

Does the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
INSTALL a new SJB (Smart Junction Box). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
