Pinpoint Test BG: The Stability/Traction Control Disabled Indicator (Sliding Car OFF Icon) Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The traction control switch is hardwired to the ABS module. When the traction control switch is pressed, the ABS module either enables or disables the stability/traction control system and sends a message to the Instrument Cluster (IC) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) indicating the traction control system state (enabled or disabled). The IC (Instrument Cluster) illuminates or turns off the stability/traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) based upon the system state.
When a MyKey(R) programmed key is in use and the AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on, the stability/traction control system cannot be disabled and the stability/traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) does not illuminate when the traction control disable button is pressed. The stability/traction control indicator still functions normally to indicate a stability/traction control system fault and a stability/traction control active event.
If the stability/traction control disabled indicator request message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the stability/traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) remains in the last indication state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the stability/traction control disabled indicator request message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0121 in continuous memory and defaults the stability/traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) off.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- A MyKey(R) programmed key is in use
- Stability/traction control cannot be disabled
- ABS module
- IC (Instrument Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST BG : THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL DISABLED INDICATOR (SLIDING CAR OFF ICON) IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
BG1 CARRY OUT THE IC (Instrument Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.
- Select the IC (Instrument Cluster) all warning lamps (ALL_LAMP) active command. Command all the warning lamps on and off while observing the stability/traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon).
Does the stability/traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to BG2.
No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
BG2 CHECK FOR THE KEY TYPE
- Check if the key is a MyKey(R) programmed key or an administrator key.
Is the key an administrator key?
Yes
GO to BG3.
No
If the MyKey(R) AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on, the system is normal. The stability/traction control system cannot be disabled when the AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is configured always on.
If the MyKey(R) AdvanceTrac(R) on feature is not configured always on, GO to BG3.
BG3 CHECK THE TRACTION CONTROL INPUT TO THE ABS MODULE
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: ABS Module DataLogger.
- Select the ABS module traction control switch status PID (TCYC_SW).
- Monitor the traction control switch status PID while pressing and releasing the traction control disable switch.
Does the traction control switch status PID read NOT DEPRESSED when the button is released and DEPRESSED when the button is pressed?
Yes
GO to BG4.
No
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems to diagnose the stability/traction control system cannot be disabled.
BG4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the IC (Instrument Cluster) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0121, GO to Pinpoint Test AW. Pinpoint Test AW: DTC U0121
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to BG5.
BG5 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the ABS module self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems.
No
INSTALL a new ABS module. TEST the system for normal operation.
