Pinpoint Test AG: The Compass Is Inoperative

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 60, Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operation

The compass sensor module is integral to the auto-dimming interior mirror. The auto-dimming interior mirror receives voltage from the Smart Junction Box (SJB). The auto-dimming interior mirror communicates the vehicle direction to the Instrument Cluster (IC) through the compass communication data plus circuit and compass communication data minus circuit.

- DTC B2097 (Compass Module Failure)- sets in continuous memory if the IC (Instrument Cluster) detects invalid data sent from the compass module.

- DTC U2013 (Compass Module Is Not Responding)- sets in continuous memory and on-demand if the IC (Instrument Cluster) is missing the compass data from the auto-dimming interior mirror. If the IC (Instrument Cluster) fails to receive the compass data, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U2013 and defaults the compass display to (----).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Fuse

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- Auto-dimming interior mirror

PINPOINT TEST AG : THE COMPASS IS INOPERATIVE

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings.

AG1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Is DTC B2097 recorded?

Yes
INSTALL a new compass module. REPEAT the self-test. CLEAR the DTCs.

No
If DTC U2013 is recorded, GO to AG2.

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes

AG2 CHECK THE AUTO-DIMMING INTERIOR MIRROR VOLTAGE SUPPLY

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect: Auto-Dimming Interior Mirror C911 or C9039 (With Rear View Camera).

- Ignition ON.

- On mirrors without the rear video camera display, measure the voltage between the auto-dimming interior mirror C911-1, circuit CBP41 (BU), harness side and ground.





- If equipped with the rear video camera display mirror, measure the voltage between the compass sensor module C9039-1, circuit CBP41 (BU), harness side and ground.





Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
GO to AG3.

No
VERIFY the SJB (Smart Junction Box) fuse 41 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit for an open. If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short Electrical Diagrams. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

AG3 CHECK THE AUTO-DIMMING INTERIOR MIRROR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.

- On mirrors without the rear video camera display, measure the resistance between the auto-dimming interior mirror C911-3, circuit GD133 (BK), harness side and ground.





- If equipped with the rear video camera display mirror, measure the resistance between the compass sensor module C9039-3, circuit GD133 (BK), harness side and ground.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AG4.

No
REPAIR circuit GD133 (BK) for an open. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

AG4 CHECK THE COMPASS COMMUNICATION DATA PLUS CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN AND SHORT TO GROUND

- Disconnect: IC (Instrument Cluster) C220.

- On mirrors without the rear video camera display, measure the resistance between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-10, circuit VMC31 (GY/BU), harness side and the auto-dimming interior mirror C911-6, circuit VMC31 (GY/BU), harness side; and between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-10, circuit VMC31 (GY/BU), harness side and ground.





- If equipped with the rear video camera display mirror, measure the resistance between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-10, circuit VMC31 (GY/BU), harness side and the rear video camera display mirror C9039-9, circuit (GY/BU), harness side; and between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-10, circuit (GY/BU), harness side and ground.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the IC (Instrument Cluster) and the compass sensor module, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the IC (Instrument Cluster) and ground?

Yes
GO to AG5.

No
REPAIR circuit VMC31 (GY/BU) for an open or short to ground. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

AG5 CHECK THE COMPASS MODULE COMMUNICATION MINUS CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN AND SHORT TO GROUND

- On mirrors without the rear video camera display, measure the resistance between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-11, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side and the auto-dimming interior mirror C911-7, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side; and between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-11, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side and ground.





- If equipped with the rear video camera display mirror, measure the resistance between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-11, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side and the rear video camera display mirror C9039-10, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side; and between the IC (Instrument Cluster) C220-11, circuit VMC30 (BU/GY), harness side and ground.





Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the IC (Instrument Cluster) and the compass sensor module, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the IC (Instrument Cluster) and ground?

Yes
INSTALL a new auto-dimming interior mirror. SET the zone. REFER to Compass Zone Adjustment - With Message Center or Compass Zone Adjustment - Without Message Center . CALIBRATE the compass. REFER to Compass Calibration - With Message Center or Compass Calibration - Without Message Center . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

No
REPAIR circuit VMC30 (BU/GY) for an open or a short to ground. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
