Steering Column Replacement

Removal Procedure





Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement Standard.
3. Remove the column filler panel screws and panel.
4. Disconnect the trailer brake linkage or the shift cable from the column control lever, if the vehicle is equipped.
5. Remove the upper joint bolt (2) from the steering shaft. Mark the relationship of the upper joint to the steering shaft.




6. Remove the bolts (6) and the nut from the toe plate.
7. Remove the plastic tie strap holding the electrical harness to the column.
8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the steering column harness.
For models equipped with a column shift follow the additional steps for the lower steering column:

1. Disconnect the electrical switch.
2. Remove the electrical switch and cover.

9. Remove the nuts holding the column support bracket to the instrument panel.
10. Remove the steering column assembly (3). Rotate the column in order for the trailer brake control lever to clear the dash opening.




11. Mount the steering column in a suitable holding fixture taking care not to damage the column.
12. Remove the column support bracket bolts (2, 3, 5, 6).
13. Remove the support (2).

Installation Procedure




1. Mount the steering column in a suitable holding fixture taking care not damage the column.
2. Install the support to the column.
3. Install the support mounting bolts in the following sequence:

1. Install bolt (5)
2. Install bolt (6)
3. Install bolt (4)
4. Install bolt (3)

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

4. Insure proper alignment.

Tighten the support mounting bolts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).




5. Install the lower end of the steering column (3) through the dash opening.

Caution: In order to ensure the intended function of the steering column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to the driver, perform the following:

* Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage the steering column.
* Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified torque. Overtightening the upper steering column fasteners could affect the steering column collapse.

6. Install the support bracket nuts (5), loosely.
Finger tighten the nuts.
7. Guide the steering shaft into the upper joint.
Align the marks which were made at the removal.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

8. Install the upper joint bolt. The bolt must pass through the shaft undercut.

Tighten the upper joint nut to 62 Nm (45 lb ft).

9. Install the bolts (6) through the plate and the seal (7) to the dash panel.

* Tighten the lower steering column support bracket bolts/nut to 13 Nm (115 lb in).
* Tighten the upper steering column support bracket nuts to 27 Nm (20 lb ft).

10. Install the wiring connectors to the steering column harness.
11. Install a new tie strap to secure the wiring harness to the steering column.
12. Install the steering column filler panel.
13. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement Standard.
14. Connect the trailer brake linkage or the shift cable to the column control lever, if the vehicle is equipped.
15. Connect the negative battery cable.
