Removing and Installing Transmission

Removing and Installing Transmission




- Disconnect ground lead.
M 20 Engine:
- Unscrew nut (1).
- Disconnect throttle cable.
Installation:
- Adjust throttle cable. Adjustments




- Remove exhaust assembly.
- Remove heat shield (1).




- Support transmission with Special Tools 24 0 120 and 002 0 20.
- Remove cross member (2).
Installation:
- Center transmission.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




- Unscrew propeller shaft on the transmission
Installation:
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




- Unscrew center mount.
Installation:
- Preload center mount forward by distance A = 2 to 4 mm (0.079 to 0.157mm).
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Bend propeller shaft down and pull it off of the transmission.
IMPORTANT!
- Suspend propeller shaft from a piece of wire.




- Drain oil.
IMPORTANT!
- Never reuse drained oil.
Installation:
- It oil smells burnt and is black, the transmission must be disassembled
IMPORTANT!
- Blow out oil cooler and lines with compressed air and flush twice with ATF, if transmission was repaired.




- Remove oil filler pipe (1).
- Unscrew oil cooler lines on transmission.
Installation:
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
Important! - Installation:
- Check condition of O-rings hi replacing if necessary.




- Unscrew nut (2) - counterhold.
- Disconnect cable on holder
- Pull out cable
Installation:
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Adjust shift. Adjustments




M 20 Engine:
- Remove reinforcement plate.
- Unscrew Torx bolts with a Torx socket**.
IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Washers must be used with Torx bolts to avoid Increasing the breaking loose torque.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Lift out protective grill.




- Loosen torque converter on the drive plate at three points, turning the flywheel for this purpose.
IMPORTANT!
Only use size M 10 x 16 mm bolts together with spring washers.
Nonconformance could lead to destruction of the transmission.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




M 30 Engine:
- Lift cap oft of opening (1) in oil sump.
- Loosen torque converter on the drive plate at three points with Special Tool 24 1110, turning the flywheel for this purpose.




Installation:
- Screw in bolt with Special Tool 24 11 10 and tighten with a torque wrench.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
IMPORTANT!
Only use size M 10 x 16 mm bolts together with spring washers. Nonconformance could lead to destruction of the transmission.




- Lower the transmission as far as possible and unscrew on engine. - Unscrew Torx bolts with a Torx socket.
IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Use washers on version with Torx bolts to avoid increasing the breaking loose torque.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




- Pull transmission off of the engine, pressing off the torque converter at the same time.
IMPORTANT!
Special tool Jack with mounted transmission may be moved only in completely lowered position.




IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Check installed position of torque converter.
- Drive ring must be below edges of the case.
Note:
Make sure that the converter remains In its installed position while assembling, prevent it from sliding out if necessary.




Installation:
- Check drive plate for breaks and cracks, replacing if necessary.
M 20 Engine:
- Hold flywheel with Special Tool 11 2 170.
- Unscrew expansion bolts.
IMPORTANT!
- Install new expansion bolts with a bolt cement.
- Only coat the threads.
- Clean tapped bores thoroughly.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




M 30 Engine:
- Hold flywheel with Special Tool 11 2 160.
- Unscrew expansion bolts.
