Transfer Case Cover: Service and Repair

Final Drive Cover with Right Flange Shaft

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)

Removing

- Remove the air filter housing.





- Remove the right drive axle heat shield => [ (Item 6) Heat shield ] Shaft Seal and Right Flange Shaft Assembly Overview.

- Remove the catalytic converter bracket => [ (Item 8) Exhaust manifold with catalytic converter bracket ] Shaft Seal and Right Flange Shaft Assembly Overview.

- Removing right drive axle.

- Place the Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782) underneath and drain the transmission fluid - 1 -.





R tronic

- Remove the hydraulic unit. Refer to => [ Hydraulic Unit ] Hydraulic Unit - Removing.





CAUTION!
There is a risk of destroying the differential.

• When removing the final drive cover, make sure the differential does not fall out.

• If the left flange shaft will also be removed, the differential will no longer have a guide and must be removed.

• Do not install a differential that has fallen onto the floor.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the final drive cover with the flange shaft.





Installing

• Tightening specification. Refer to => [ Shaft Seal and Right Flange Shaft Assembly Overview ] Shaft Seal and Right Flange Shaft Assembly Overview.

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

- Replace the O-rings => [ (Item 9) O-ring ] Shaft Seal and Right Flange Shaft Assembly Overview and => [ (Item 10) O-ring ] Shaft Seal and Right Flange Shaft Assembly Overview on the final drive cover.

- Insert the final drive cover with the flange shaft and tighten the bolts - arrows -.

- Install and tighten the oil drain plug - 1 -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 9) Oil drain plug ] Bearing Housing Assembly Overview.





- Fill the transmission oil and check the oil level. Refer to => [ Oil Drain, Oil Fill and Oil Check Plug Assembly Overview ] Description and Operation.

- Install right drive axle.

- Install right drive axle heat shield => [ (Item 6) Heat shield ] Shaft Seal and Right Flange Shaft Assembly Overview.

- Install catalytic converter bracket => [ (Item 8) Exhaust manifold with catalytic converter bracket ] Shaft Seal and Right Flange Shaft Assembly Overview.

- Install air filter housing.
