A/C System Evaporator, Cleaning
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Ultrasound A/C Cleaner (VAS 6189A)
• Cleaning Fluid (VAS 6189/1)
• Suction nozzle with brush (VAS 6288)
• Standard vacuum cleaner
• Numerous procedures varying in their application and effect are available on the market for cleaning the evaporator. Currently Audi offers the (VAS 6189A) which has been approved and released for cleaning the evaporator.
• The odor can only be removed by cleaning with the (VAS 6189A ) if it originates in the evaporator.
Procedure
- Check whether the odor is actually in the A/C evaporator by switching from fresh air to recirculation, refer to => [ A/C System, Odor Causes ] Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.
- Remove the dust and pollen filter, refer to => [ Dust and Pollen Filter ] Service and Repair.
- Clean the dust and pollen filter installation shaft, refer to => [ Installing ] Service and Repair.
- Seal the opening on A/C unit where the dust and pollen filter was removed.
- Start the engine.
- Adjust the Climatronic Control Module (J255) recirculation mode and switch the A/C compressor off (the indicator lamp in the AC is off).
- Open the instrument panel vent and adjust the Climatronic control module temperature rotary knob to the cold position.
- Close the windows.
- Set the Climatronic control module to the lowest fresh air blower speed and the air distribution knob to instrument panel vents.
- Shake the bottle of (VAS 6189/1) and pour it into the (VAS 6189A).
• Using the (VAS 6189A)Operating Instructions:
- Place (VAS 6189A) in passenger side footwell.
- Start up the (VAS 6189A) (according to operating instructions) and route the outlet hose belonging to it so that the vapor escaping via the recirculated air opening of the heating and A/C unit (beneath instrument panel) is drawn in by the Fresh Air Blower (V2).
- Close vehicle doors.
• The cleaning procedure lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes. It is done when vapor stops coming out of the outlet hose.
- Switch (VAS 6189A) off.
- Open the vehicle doors and air the vehicle out for at least 10 minutes.
- Remove the (VAS 6189A) from the vehicle and clean it.
- Switch off ignition.
- Install the dust and pollen filter, refer to => [ Dust and Pollen Filter ] Service and Repair.
