Oil Pan

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Protective eyewear
Removing
- Turn off the ignition and remove the key.
- Remove both rear sound insulators, loosening the bolts - 2 -, - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Remove the crossmember - D -.
On Vehicles with 12-Cylinder Engine:
- Remove both front exhaust pipes with the front muffler.
- Remove exhaust system bracket.
On Vehicles with 10-Cylinder Engine:
- Remove the right and left Y-pipes.
All:
- Place (V.A.G 1782) beneath transmission.
Wear protective eyewear.
- Remove the ATF drain plug - arrow A - and drain the ATF.
- Remove the oil pan bolts in a - 24 to 1 - sequence (opposite the tightening sequence).
- Remove the oil pan.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal.
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Oil Pan, Oil Strainer and Mechatronic Overview ] Oil Pan, Oil Strainer and Mechatronic Overview
• Replace the seal.
• The oil drain plug and seal must be replaced.
• If the vehicle has high mileage, replacing the oil strainer - A - is recommended when the oil pan is removed. Refer to => [ Oil Screen ] Oil Screen. Otherwise the ATF strainer must be replaced only if it is damaged.
- Clean all magnets in the oil pan. Make sure that the magnets are in full contact with the oil pan.
- Clean the sealing surface on the transmission and on the oil pan.
• The sealing surfaces must be dry and free of grease.
• Remove any left over pieces of the old seal.
- Make sure the oil screen - A - fits correctly. Push on it again if necessary.
• The transmission will not work properly when the vehicle is being driven if the oil screen - A - is installed incorrectly.
• If the oil screen - A - cannot be positioned correctly, that is, it hangs down in the back, then replace it. Refer to => [ Oil Screen ] Oil Screen.
- Install the 4 guide pins (T40199) into - 11, 12, 23, and 24 - with the oil pan removed.
• The (T40199) center the gasket and the oil pan. This assures optimal sealing.
- Push the new gasket and oil pan over the (T40199).
- Tighten the oil pan bolts in the following sequence: - 1 to 10 -.
- Remove the 4 (T40199).
- Install the remaining bolts in the following sequence: - 11 to 24 -.
- Fill the ATF. Refer to => [ ATF, Draining or Filling after Repair ] ATF, Draining or Filling After Repair.
- Install the crossmember - D -.
- Install exhaust system and adjust free of tension.
