Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Special hook (3370)
• Trim removal wedge (3409)
• Hook (3438)
• Protective cap (VAS 6223/9)
• Radio release tool (T10057)
• Special Screwdriver T8 (T40056 A)
• Feeler gauge
Removing
• Position cable ties that were removed or cut away during removal in same place when installing.
- Adjust steering wheel all the way up and down; to do this, use full adjustment range of steering column adjuster.
- Adjust front seat all the way back and place backrest in 45° position.
- On a vehicle with automatic transmission, place selector lever in position "S".
- Release glove compartment cover.
CAUTION!
• Observe safety precautions for work on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] Airbag System General Safety Precautions.
• Follow the allocation of the airbag unit to the instrument panel.
- Switch on ignition.
• To remove the airbag, battery must be disconnected with the ignition switched on, this deviates from the description "disconnecting and connecting battery".
- Remove luggage compartment floor trim.
- Disconnect battery ground strap - arrow -.
- Remove cover cap - 1 - left and right from backside of steering wheel - arrow -.
- Turn steering wheel out of center position about 80° right.
• The airbag unit securing screw - 3 - must be opposite the cut-out in bottom of steering column trim - 1 -.
- Remove the bolt - 2 -.
- Turn steering approx. 160° left and remove left airbag unit screw.
- Bring steering wheel to center position (wheels straight).
CAUTION!
Before disconnecting connectors, technician must discharge electrostatic energy. To do this, briefly touch door lock, for example.
- Pull driver's airbag unit from steering wheel a bit.
- Push connector lock - 4 - to stop - arrow -; this disconnects electrical connection - 2 - and it can be removed.
- Remove airbag unit - 1 - from steering wheel.
- If applicable, disconnect electrical connection - 3 -.
- Place airbag unit so padding faces upward.
• Wheels must be in straight-ahead position when removing or installing steering wheel.
- Remove the bolt - 1 -.
- Mark steering wheel/steering column position to each other with felt-tip pen.
- Remove steering wheel - 2 - from steering column.
- Pry driver side instrument panel cover off with a screwdriver - arrow -.
- Remove lower driver side instrument panel cover screws - arrows -.
- Grip driver side lower instrument panel cover by top edge and pull back.
- Unclip diagnostic connector (T16).
- Disconnect electrical connectors.
- Unclip the gap cover - 1 - from the upper steering column switch trim - 2 - first on side - arrow A - and then on top - arrow B -. To do this, use (3409).
- If the old (T40056) is still on hand, grind conically at places marked with - arrows -.
- Remove screws - 3 - and - 4 - with (T40056 A).
- Fold mechanical steering column adjuster handle - 5 - down, if equipped.
- Remove the bolts - 6 -.
- Separate upper steering column switch trim - 2 - from lower steering column switch trim - 1 - and remove both parts.
- Disconnect electrical connectors on electric steering column adjustment switch, if equipped.
- Remove the screw - 2 - just a few turns.
- Disconnect electrical connectors - 1 -, - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Carefully remove steering column switch together with Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527).
- Remove the driver side instrument panel vent. Refer to => [ Driver Side Instrument Panel Vent ] Driver Side Instrument Panel Vent.
- Remove the center instrument panel vent. Refer to => [ Center Instrument Panel Vent ] Center Instrument Panel Vent.
- Remove the the light switch - 3 - in position "0".
- Remove the spreader pin - 2 - on the air duct - 1 - and remove air duct.
- Reaching through opening above instrument panel vent, grab light switch from side and push it out of instrument cluster - arrow -.
- Disconnect electrical connector.
- Press cover strip - 1 - on instrument cluster switch panel in - direction of arrow -.
- Grab cover strip and pull off from switch.
- Set (3438) into switch panel opening - arrow -.
- Carefully pull out switch panel - 1 - from instrument cluster trim.
- Disconnect electrical connector.
- Press cover strip - 1 - on glove compartment release switch in - direction of arrow -.
- Grab cover strip and pull off from switch.
- Set (3438) into switch panel opening - arrow -.
- Carefully pull out switch panel - 1 - from instrument cluster trim.
- Disconnect electrical connector.
- Remove bolts - arrows -.
- Remove bolts - arrows -.
- Pull instrument cluster partially out of the instrument panel.
- Disconnect electrical connector at instrument cluster by pressing retaining catch - 1 -, turning retaining bracket in - direction of arrow - and pulling off connector.
- Release connector retainer - 1 - at MMI display - arrow - and pivot it upward.
- Disconnect electrical connection - 2 - at MMI display.
- Remove instrument cluster trim with instrument cluster and MMI display.
- Remove the Climatronic control module (J255).
- Remove bolts - arrows -.
- Remove Access/Start Authorization Switch (E415) from instrument panel.
- Disconnect electrical harness connectors - 1 to 3 -.
- Pry passenger side instrument panel cover off with a screwdriver - arrow -.
• If glove compartment cover does not open, it can be opened using an emergency release.
• Guide a punch dia. 6 mm - Item 2 - through opening - arrow -, press locking pin in and open glove compartment cover - 1 -.
- If applicable, remove CD changer (R41) as follows:
- Insert 2 clamps on (T10057) in front side of CD changer (R41).
• Top L - upper left
• Top R - upper right
- Remove CD changer (R41) from installation frame.
- Disconnect electrical connector.
- Disconnect fiber optic connector - 2 -.
- Seal the open wiring set connector - 2 - for fiber-optic cable using (VAS 6223/9) - item 1 -.
• The protective cap prevents soiling and damage to fiber optic face, which would impair light transfer.
- Remove release tool and press locking tabs on CD changer (R41).
- Remove bolts - arrows -.
- Disconnect the connector on the central connector.
- Remove glove compartment.
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] Airbag System General Safety Precautions.
- Remove instrument panel screws - arrows - on central tube.
CAUTION!

- Press securing catch - 1 - in - direction of arrow - until connection disengages.
- Remove electrical connector - 2 -.
- Pry screw cover cap - 1 - off with screwdriver.
- Remove screw.
- Unclip center console left side trim - 2 - with (3409) and pull up and out.
- Pry screw cover cap - 2 - off with screwdriver.
- Remove screw.
- Unclip center console right side trim - 1 - with (3409) and pull up and out.
- Place rear center console vent blades horizontally.
• The rear center console vent has holes to hang the (3438).
- Remove rear center console vent with (3438) in - direction of arrow -.
- Disconnect the connector from the rear center console vent.
Vehicles with front center armrest:
- If applicable, disconnect electrical connectors - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Pull front center armrest up and out.
Vehicles with rear cup holder:
- Remove inlay mat.
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Remove rear cup holder from rear center console.
All:
- Lift rear storage compartment inlay mat out of rear center console using (3370) in - direction of arrow -.
- Disconnect the connector - 2 -.
- Remove the bolts - 1 -.
- Disengage left and right of rear center console, push catches - 3 - and lift rear center console up and out.
- If applicable, disconnect rear seat heating rotary knob electrical connections.
- Remove gap cover over ashtray - arrow -.
- Open front ashtray.
- Remove front ashtray insert.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Release ashtray - 3 - with a screwdriver - arrow - by positioning screw driver on opening - 4 -.
- Remove front ashtray housing.
- If applicable, disconnect electrical connection.
- Unclip shift or selector lever boot - 1 - on both sides and pull up to remove - arrows -.
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
- Release retaining spring - 2 - and pull selector lever chart - 1 - up and out.
- Disconnect electrical connector.
All:
- Remove bolts - arrows -.
- Lift front console a little on rear edge and pull back from instrument panel.
- Disconnect electrical connectors.
- Remove Sunlight Photo Sensor (G107) - Item 1 - with 0.35 mm feeler gauge - 2 - and disconnect electrical connector.
- Remove passenger side A-pillar trim. Refer to => [ Upper A-Pillar Trim ] Upper A-Pillar Trim.
- Remove the spreader pin - 1 - on the air duct - 2 - and remove air duct.
- Remove screws - arrows - on passenger side of instrument panel.
- Disconnect instrument panel vent electrical connector, if equipped.
- Remove passenger side A-pillar trim. Refer to => [ Upper A-Pillar Trim ] Upper A-Pillar Trim.
- Remove screws - arrows - on driver side of instrument panel.
- Disconnect driver side instrument panel vent electrical connectors and headlight range control rotary knob.
- Remove screws - arrows - on center of instrument panel.
• 2 technicians are needed to remove the instrument panel.
- Remove instrument panel from the vehicle interior.
- Set down instrument panel with top side on to a soft surface.
Installation
CAUTION!
Follow the allocation of the airbag unit to the instrument panel.
Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
• When installing, position cable ties in same place.
- Check whether a rubber buffer - 2 - is present at left and right on clamp - 1 - on lower windshield frame.
- Install instrument panel and guide photo sensor connector through opening.
- Pressing down lightly, push instrument panel forward into clamp.
- Align instrument panel and tighten screws.
- Install front center console. Refer to => [ Front Center Console ] Front Center Console.
- Install rear center console. Refer to => [ Rear Center Console ] Rear Center Console.
- Install glove compartment. Refer to => [ Installing ] Glove Compartment.
- Install steering wheel.
- Follow measures after connecting battery.
