Crankshaft: Service and Repair
Crankshaft
Removing
- Remove the engine. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing ] Engine, Removing.
- Remove the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.
- Remove the oil pump pickup tube bolt, tube (1) and seal (2).
- Remove the windage tray bolts and tray (3).
- Remove the front timing belt cover. Refer to => [ Front Timing Belt Cover ] Front Timing Belt Cover.
- Remove the timing belt and tensioner. Refer to => [ Timing Belt Tensioner ] Timing Belt Tensioner.
- Remove the crankshaft sprocket. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Sprocket ] Crankshaft Sprocket.
- Using a small punch (1), tap the dowel pin (2) out of crankshaft.
- Remove the oil pump. Refer to=> [ Oil Pump ] Removal and Replacement.
- Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer bolts (2) and retainer (1).
- Remove the main cap tie (horizontal) bolts.
• Do not use a metal stamp to mark the connecting rod or main bearing caps. Use only a scribe or paint mark.
- Identify the connecting rod bearing caps before removal. Scribe a location reference mark from the number 2 main bearing cap to the engine block to use as a guide during the reassembly.
- Remove the connecting rod bearing cap bolts and caps. The connecting rod bearing caps are not interchangeable and should be paint marked or scribed before removal to insure correct reassembly.
- Remove the crankshaft main bearing cap bolts (2) and caps (1). The main bearing caps (1) are not interchangeable and should be marked before removal to insure correct reassembly.
- Remove the crankshaft (4) from the cylinder block (7).
• Before installing the crankshaft, refer to => [ Crankshaft Main Bearing Fitting ] Crankshaft Main Bearing Fitting, and => [ Connecting Rods and Bearings ] Procedures.
Installing
The crankshaft main bearings are select fit. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Main Bearing Fitting ] Crankshaft Main Bearing Fitting.
- Install the crankshaft upper main bearings in the cylinder block. Ensure that the oil holes in the bearings line up with the oil holes in the cylinder block. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Main Bearing Fitting ] Crankshaft Main Bearing Fitting.
- Install the crankshaft into the cylinder block.
- Move the crankshaft forward to its limit of travel. Lubricate with clean engine oil and install the front thrust washer (1) by rolling the washer onto the machined shelf between the number 2 upper main bulk head and crankshaft thrust surface.
- Move the crankshaft rearward to its limit of travel. Lubricate with clean engine oil and install the rear thrust washer by rolling the washer onto the machined shelf between the number 2 upper main bulk head and crankshaft thrust surface.
- Install the lower main bearings (3) into the main bearing caps (1).
- Lubricate the lower main bearings (3) with clean engine oil.
• Lubricate the main bearing cap inner bolts with engine oil before installation.
- Install each main cap (1) and tighten the inner bolts finger tight. Align the location reference mark scribed on the number 2 main bearing cap during disassembly.
The number 2 main bearing cap must be centered over the inner bolt holes located on the block. Failure to center the bearing cap can result in contact with the crankshaft counterweights and thrust bearing failure.
- Verify that the number 2 main bearing cap is properly centered over the inner bolt holes located in the block. Tighten the main bearing cap inner bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft lbs).
- Move the crankshaft (1) forward to its limit of travel so that the crankshaft thrust face (2) is tight against the thrust bearing.
- Verify that a 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) shim or feeler gage will fit between the number 2 main cap (rear face) and the crankshaft thrust face. Slide the gage side to side all of the way across the cap making sure that the clearance at all areas exceeds 0.25 mm (0.010 inch). The feeler gage should slide all the way down to the number 2 main journal.
- Move the crankshaft (1) rearward to its limit of travel so that crankshaft thrust face (2) is tight against thrust bearing.
- Verify that a 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) shim or feeler gage will fit between the number 2 main cap (front face) and the crankshaft thrust face. Slide the gage side to side all of the way across the cap making sure that the clearance at all areas exceeds 0.25 mm (0.010 inch). The feeler gage should slide all the way down to the number 2 main journal.
- A properly centered number 2 main bearing cap has a minimum of 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) clearance in both the forward and rearward crankshaft positions. If measured clearance is less than 0.25 mm (0.010 inch), loosen and reposition the number 2 main bearing cap until this minimum clearance can be verified by repeating this procedure.
- Following verification of proper number 2 bearing cap centering, finish tightening the main bearing cap inner bolts an additional 90 degree turn.
- Measure the crankshaft end play. Refer to => [ Measuring Crankshaft End Play ] Testing and Inspection.
- Install the connecting rods and measure side clearance. Refer to => [ Connecting Rods and Bearings ] Procedures.
• The main bearing cap bolts must be tightened in the proper sequence. First the inner main cap bolts, secondly the windage tray bolts, lastly the main cap tie (horizontal) bolts.
- Install the windage tray (3) and bolts. Lubricate the bolts with clean engine oil. Hand tighten all the bolts first, then tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs) + 90 degree additional turn beginning with the inside bolts tightening outward.
- Install a new oil pump pickup tube seal (2) onto the pickup tube.
- Lubricate the pickup tube seal with clean engine oil.
- Install the oil pump pickup tube (1) and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs).
- Install the main cap tie (horizontal) bolts. Tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs).
- Install the rear crankshaft oil seal retainer and oil seal. Refer to=> [ Rear Oil Seal Retainer ] Rear Oil Seal Retainer.
- Install the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Removal and Replacement.
- Install the dowel pin in the crankshaft. Refer to => [ Front Cover Oil Seal ] Front Cover Oil Seal.
- Install the crankshaft sprocket. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Sprocket ] Crankshaft Sprocket.
- Install the timing belt and tensioner. Refer to => [ Timing Belt ] Timing Belt.
- Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to => [ Front Timing Belt Cover ] Front Timing Belt Cover.
- Install the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.
- Install the engine assembly. Refer to=> [ Engine, Installing ] Engine, Installing.
- Fill the engine crankcase with the proper amount and type of engine oil.
