Crankshaft: Service and Repair






Crankshaft

Removing






- Remove the engine. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing ] Engine, Removing.

- Mount the engine on a suitable engine stand.

- Remove the oil filter.

- Remove the oil pan and oil pick up tube. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Removal and Replacement.

- Remove the timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Valve Timing Covers ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to => [ Timing Sprocket, Crankshaft ] Timing Sprocket, Crankshaft.

- Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal and retainer. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Retainer ] Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Retainer.

- Rotate the crankshaft until the connecting rod cap is accessible.

- Paint mark or scribe the connecting rod cap position (1) on both the connecting rod and cap.

- Remove the connecting rod bearing cap. Use care to prevent damage to the crankshaft bearing surfaces.

- Repeat the removal steps for each connecting rod cap.






- Remove and discard the main bearing cross bolts and washers (8).

Install new cross bolts and washers (8) upon reassembly.

- Remove the main bearing cap bolts (4).

- Remove the main bearing caps (1,2,3 and 5).

- Remove the crankshaft (11) from engine block.

- Remove the crankshaft bearings (7 and 10).

Installing






- Lubricate with engine oil and install the crankshaft main bearing halves (7 and 10) to the engine block.

- Place the crankshaft (11) into position in the engine block.

- Perform the main bearing fitting procedure. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Main Bearing Fitting ] Crankshaft Main Bearing Fitting.






- Inspect the main cap bolts for stretching (2). Replace bolts that are stretched.

The main cap bolts should be examined before reuse. Bolt stretch (2) can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads (3) do not contact the scale the bolt must be replaced.








- Install the main bearing caps (1,2,3 and 5) and bolts (4). Tighten the bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft lbs) plus an additional 1/4 turn.

Install the new cross bolts and washers (8) upon assembly.

- Install and tighten the new cross bolts and washers. Tighten the bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft lbs).

- Position and Install the connecting rod and bearing caps. Refer to => [ Connecting Rod Bearing Clearance ] Connecting Rod Bearing Clearance.

- Install the crankshaft rear oil seal. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Retainer ] Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Retainer.

- Install the crankshaft sprocket. Refer to => [ Timing Sprocket, Crankshaft ] Timing Sprocket, Crankshaft.

- Install the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Refer to => [ Timing Sprocket, Camshaft ] Timing Sprocket, Camshaft.

- Install the timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Valve Timing Covers ] Service and Repair.

- Install the oil pick up tube and oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Removal and Replacement.

- Install the engine assembly. Refer to => [ Engine, Installing ] Engine, Installing.
