Constant Velocity Joint: Service and Repair



Drive axle constant velocity (CV) joint VL107, assembly overview





1 - Outer constant velocity joint
^ Replace only as a unit
^ Removing
^ Installing: Using a plastic hammer, drive onto axle shaft as far as stop
^ Checking

2 - Hex head bolt
^ Torque specifications
^ Replace each time it is removed

3 - Circlip
^ Replace each time it is removed
^ Insert in groove in axle shaft

4 - Thrust washer
^ Installed location

5 - Spring washer
^ Installed location

6 - Clamp
^ Replace each time it is removed
^ Tightening

7 - Protective boot
^ Check for tears and chafing
^ Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer)

8 - Clamp
^ Replace each time it is removed
^ Tightening

9 - Axle shaft

10 - Clamp
^ Replace each time it is removed
^ Tightening

11 - Constant velocity joint boots
^ Material: Hytrel (Polyelastomer)
^ No vent hole
^ Check for tears and chafing
^ Drive off constant velocity joint with a drift
^ Before installing on constant velocity joint, coat sealing surface with D 454 300 A2

12 - Clamp
^ Replace each time it is removed

13 - Backing plate

14 - Cover
^ Carefully drive off with a drift
^ Before installing on constant velocity joint, coat sealing surface with D 454 300 A2
^ Adhesive surface must be free of oil and grease

15 - Inner constant velocity joint
^ Replace only as a unit
^ Pressing off
^ Pressing on
^ Checking

16 - Gasket
^ Adhesive surface on constant velocity joint must be free of oil and grease!

17 - Circlip
^ Remove and install with circlip pliers VW 161 A

18 - Cover
^ Replace each time it is removed
^ Always replace
^ Pressing off

19 - Multi-point socket head bolt

Torque specifications
^ After disassembly, always replace bolts
