Generator (GEN) - 3.6L FSI engine, removing and installing

CAUTION: When disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminals, observe all applicable Notes and torque specifications, as well as instructions on performing OBD program and electrical system function checks as specified.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required







- Torque wrench VAG 1331 (or 5 - 50 Nm equivalent)







- Mandrel T10060 A

Removing
- Disconnect battery.
- Remove noise insulation.
- Remove forward section of wheel housing liner.

CAUTION: Before removing ribbed belt, mark the top side and direction of travel. When installing, pay attention to correct running direction and installation position. If the belt is installed in the opposite running direction or is positioned incorrectly, the belt will fail.

- Mark running direction of ribbed belt.







- Release tension on ribbed belt by swinging tensioning element using a 16 mm open-end wrench in direction of -arrow-.







- Lock tensioner -2- using Mandrel T10060 A -1-.
- Remove ribbed belt.
Remove a/c compressor (without opening refrigerant circuit) and secure to body using wire.







- Remove nut -arrow- from harness retainer.







- Disconnect terminal 61 electrical connection -2-.
- Remove cap -1-.
- Open retainer -3- and remove harness.







- Remove nut -1- at positive (B+) cable -2- and set aside cable.







- Remove bolt -1- and remove tensioner roller -2-.







- Remove bolts -arrows-.
- Remove generator from engine.

Installing:
Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

CAUTION:
- When installing a used ribbed belt, note the direction of travel marked during removal.
- Before installing the ribbed belt, make sure all components (generator, A/C compressor) are securely fastened.
- When installing the ribbed belt, make sure it is properly seated in the belt pulley.








- Drive threaded sleeves -A- out of generator housing approx. 4 mm in direction of -arrow -.







- Screw wire retainer -arrow- firmly to rear side of generator in 9 o'clock position.
- Install ribbed belt according to routing diagram
- Torque all fasteners according to value in table.

CAUTION: Observe battery post/terminal handling instructions.

- Reconnect battery.
- Start engine and verify the belt is running properly.
- Turn off engine.
