Removal and Replacement



Rear Heating And A/C Unit, Removing And Installing

Special tools, workshop equipment and auxiliary items required







- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or 5-50 Nm equivalent)







- VAS 6208 Drip tray for shop crane VAS 6100 (or equivalent)







- 3093 Hose clamps (> 40 mm)







- Refrigerant recycling/recovery unit Kent-Moore ACR4 (or UL approved equivalent - VAS 6007A illustrated for reference only).

Removing

WARNING: Rear heating and A/C unit must only be removed after refrigerant circuit has been discharged.

CAUTION:
- Switch off all electrical consumers.
- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.


NOTE: Always refill and bleed engine cooling system after opening and performing related repairs.

- Position drip tray VAS 6208 (or equivalent) under engine.

WARNING: The cooling system is pressurized when the engine is warm. Wear gloves and other protection and carefully release system pressure if necessary before performing repairs.

- Drain cooling system.
- Observe notes.
- Discharge refrigerant circuit.
- Remove left rear wheel housing cover
- Remove left rear wheel housing cover.
- Clamp off both coolant hoses to rear heater core using hose clamps 3093 -Separate both coolant hose/pipe connections.
- Remove bolts for refrigerant lines (12 Nm) and remove from mounting plate.







- Remove screws from mounting plate (10 Nm).

CAUTION: Immediately plug open connections on A/C components and lines to prevent dirt and moisture contamination.

- Remove left rear side trim







- Disconnect electrical connections at rear heating and A/C unit
- Remove screws -A- (8 Nm)
- Cover carpet in area under heating and A/C unit using waterproof foil and water absorbing paper.
- Tilt rear heating and A/C unit into rear compartment and remove through rear hatch opening.

CAUTION: Use care not to allow coolant to leak onto rear carpet.

Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

NOTE: Always replace O-rings.







- Ensure evaporator water drain hose is not kinked -arrow-
- Secure connections using clamps of standard used in series production.
- Refill and bleed cooling system.
