Glow Plugs, Servicing
CAUTION:
- Ceramic glow plugs are sensitive to bumps and bending.
- For this reason glow plugs that have been dropped must never be used, even if no damage can be seen (and even if the dropped height was only about 2cm).
- It is absolutely necessary to follow the installation instructions, otherwise there is risk of a pin crack which may result in engine damage.

- Adapter set V.A.G 1594 C
- Voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B
- Hinged socket SW 10 3220
Requirements
- Strip fuse for glow plugs in fuse holder/battery OK
- Battery charge at least 11.5V
- Ignition switched off
Work sequence
- Remove engine cover.
- Disconnect glow plug connectors from glow plugs.
- Connect cable of voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B with clips from adapter set V.A.G 1594 C to battery positive (+).
- Touch test pick of voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B to every glow plug one after another.
If diode lights up: Glow plug OK
If diode does not light up:
- Replace glow plug.
- Use hinged socket 3220.
- Tightening torque: 15 Nm

- Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
- Multimeter V.A.G 1526B or Multimeter V.A.G 1526A
- Adapter set V.A.G 1594C
Requirements
- Engine is cold
- Ignition is switched off
Procedure
CAUTION:
- Ceramic glow plugs are sensitive to bumps and bending.
- For this reason glow plugs that have been dropped must never be used, even if no damage,can be seen (and even if the dropped height was only about 2cm).
- It is absolutely necessary to follow the installation instructions, otherwise there is risk of a pin crack which may result in engine damage.
NOTE: Do not tilt the ceramic glow plugs when removing and installing.
- Remove engine cover.
- Disconnect connectors from glow plugs.
- Remove ceramic glow plugs with hinged socket 3220.
Installation is performed in the reverse order. When installing, note the following:
- Before installing, remove all deposits around cylinder head hole and on plug hole threads.
NOTE: The thread of the hole in the cylinder head or the ceramic glow plugs must never be greased or oiled.
- Install ceramic glow plugs into cylinder head by hand using hinged socket 3220.
- Tighten ceramic glow plugs.
- Tightening torque: 15 Nm
CAUTION: After installing and before the first engine start on the cold engine, always check the resistance of all ceramic glow plugs.
- Specification: max. 1 Ohms
If the specification is exceeded:
- Replace faulty ceramic glow plugs.
NOTE: If the faulty ceramic glow plug is broken, remove all the fragments, otherwise the engine could be damaged.
