Clutch Switch: Testing and Inspection
Clutch Position Sensor G476, Checking Signal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or Multimeter V.A.G 1715
- Connector test set V.A.G 1594
- Wiring diagram
Test conditions
- The respective fuse of Clutch Position Sensor G476 must be OK.
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 Volts.
- All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
- The parking brake must be applied, otherwise daytime running lights are switched on.
- If vehicle is equipped with an A/C system, it must be switched off.
- The ground (GND) connections between engine and body must be OK.
- Ignition switched off.
Test sequence
- Remove engine cover.
- Remove battery and battery carrier.
- Disconnect the 5-pin connector - 4 - of Clutch Position Sensor G476.
- Check wiring from terminal 5 to fuse SB 7 in engine compartment E-Box and the fuse itself.
- Connect test box to Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 wiring harness.
- Check wiring between test box and 5-pin connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

- Check wires for short circuit to each other, to B+ and Ground (GND).
If no malfunctions are detected in wires and voltage values are OK:
- Replace Clutch Position Sensor G476.
