Metal Glow Plugs






Metal Glow Plugs

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

SW 10 hex ball socket (3220)

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Hand multi meter (V.A.G 1526 C) or Multi meter (V.A.G 1526 A)

Connector test set (V.A.G 1594 C)

Test Prerequisites

Fuse strip for the glow plugs in the fuse panel/battery OK

Battery voltage at least 11.5 V

Ignition switched off

Checking

- Remove engine cover.

One Piece Engine Cover





Pull the one piece front engine cover - arrows A - upward with a quick jerk and then pull the lower mount - arrow B - forward.

Two Piece Engine Cover





On the two piece engine cover, first pull the outer cover upward with a quick jerk - arrows in the upper illustration -, then pull the inner engine cover upward with a quick jerk - arrows in lower illustration -.

- Disconnect glow plug connectors from glow plugs.

- Connect the lead of the voltage tester (V.A.G 1527 B) to battery positive (+) with the adapter clips from the connector test set (V.A.G 1594 C).





- Attach test lead of voltage tester (V.A.G 1527 B) to each glow plug in succession.

LED lights up: Glow plug OK.

LED does not light up: Replace glow plug.

Removing

- Remove the glow plugs using flex wrench (3220).

Installing

The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the disassembling sequence.

- Install the glow plugs with the hinged socket (3220) and tighten them to 15 Nm.
