Water Pump: Service and Repair

Coolant pump

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Adapter for VAG 1274 tester -VAG 1274/10-
- Refractometer -T10007-
- Drip tray -VAG 1306-
- Spring clip pliers -VAS 5024 A-
- Cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096-
- Adapter -VAG 1274/8-
- Torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm) -VAG 1331-

Removing

Note: Always replace gaskets and seals.

- Bring lock carrier into service position. [1][2]Procedures
- Drain coolant. Refer to Cooling System, Coolant Draining and Filling Service and Repair
- Remove ribbed belt. Refer to Ribbed Belt Removal and Replacement Service and Repair
- Remove toothed belt. Refer to Timing Belt Removal and Replacement Service and Repair






- Remove coolant pump bolts -1- and carefully take out coolant pump -2-.

Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal, note the following:






- Coat new O-ring -3- with coolant.
- Place coolant pump -2- into cylinder block and tighten the bolts -1- to 15 Nm.

Note: The sealing plug of the coolant pump faces downward.

- Install toothed belt. Refer to Timing Belt Removal and Replacement Service and Repair
- Install ribbed belt. Refer to Ribbed Belt Removal and Replacement Service and Repair
- Refill with coolant. Refer to Cooling System, Coolant Draining and Filling Service and Repair
