Transmission Cooler: Service and Repair
Gear oil cooler, removing and installing
Special tools and equipment
^ 3094 Hose clamps
^ VAG 1331 Torque wrench
Removing
- Check whether a coded radio is installed. If this is the case obtain anti-theft coding.
- With ignition switched off disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Remove power steering reservoir from battery carrier, do not bend hoses when doing this.
- Tie reservoir up on lock carrier.
- Remove battery and battery carrier.
Note: Observe the required measurement before disconnecting the battery.
- Remove intake hose -1- and disconnect connector -2- from mass air flow sensor.
- Remove bolts -3- and -4-.
- Remove complete air cleaner.
- Disconnect gear oil cooler hoses using -3094-.
- Open clamps -1- and disconnect hoses from gear oil cooler.
- Remove three bolts -A-.
- Screws must be renewed.
CAUTION! Do not allow coolant to drip into the transmission.
- Remove gear oil cooler -B- together with two O-rings -C- from transmission.
Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse sequence of removal. Note the following:
- Replace gear oil cooler O-rings -C-.
- Tighten bolts -A- to 20 Nm plus an additional 90° (1/4 turn)
- Observe the required measurement before and after reconnecting the battery.
- Enter radio code.
- Check coolant level in cooling system.
- Check gear oil level and top off, if necessary.
