Valve Cover: Service and Repair

Removing and installing cylinder head cover

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required





- Torque wrench (5 ... 50 Nm) V.A.G. 1331
- Sealant AMV 174 004 01

Removing





- Remove engine cover by pulling forward edge of engine cover abruptly upward - arrow - - and pulling forward out of rear securing clips - arrow B -
- Remove EGR valve.
- Remove toothed belt guard - upper part.
- Disconnect crankcase breather hose at union of charge air pipe at rear.
- Remove cylinder head cover.

Installing

Note: Replace cylinder head cover gasket and seal for bolts if damaged.





Installation is performed in the reverse sequence of removal. In the process, note the following:








- Apply a drop of sealant AMV1 7400401 (approximately 5 mm diameter) - arrows - to both side edges of front bearing cap/cylinder head sealing surfaces.





- Apply a drop of sealant AMV1 7400401 (approximately 5 mm diameter) - arrows - to both side edges of rear bearing cap/cylinder head sealing surfaces.
- Tighten cylinder head cover hand tight in sequence 1 ... 13-.
- Tighten bolts to 10 Nm in sequence -1 ... 13-.
