Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair

Valve stem seals, replacing
(with cylinder head installed)





Special tools and equipment

- 2036 Assembly appliance
- 3047A Puller
- 3122B Spark plug removal tool
- 3129 Seal driver
- T101 12 Installation tool
- V A G 1331 Torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm)





Special tools and equipment

- VW 541/1A Assembly lever
- VW 541/5 Thrust piece
- VW 653/3 Pressure hose

Removing
- Remove camshaft.
- Take out hydraulic lifters and place with running surface downward. Ensure lifters are not interchanged.
- Disconnect spark plug connectors with tool T101 12
- Remove spark plugs with spark plug removal tool 3122B.
- Set piston of appropriate cylinder to "Top Dead Center".





- Mount assembly appliance 2036 and adjust mountings to height of studs.
- Screw pressure hose VW 653/3 into spark plug thread.
- Connect pressure hose to compressed air supply of at least 6 bar.
- Remove valve springs with assembly lever VW 541/1A and thrust piece VW 541/5.

Note: Tight valve keepers can be loosened by tapping lightly on the lever.





- Pull off valve stem seals with 3047A.

Installing





- Place plastic sleeve -A- supplied on appropriate valve stem. This will prevent new valve stem seal -B- being damaged.
- Place new valve stem seal into seal driver tool 3129.
- Oil valve stem seal sealing lip and press carefully onto valve guide.
