Tie Rod: Service and Repair
Special tools and equipment
- VAG1332 torque wrench
- VAG1332/5 open jaw insert, 34 mm
- VAG1275 pliers
Removing
The tie rods can only be removed and installed with the steering gear removed.
Removing and installing power steering gear.
- Seal line/hose connections on power steering gear (if not already done).
- Clean outside of power steering gear in area of boot.
- Open clamps and push boot back.
- Clamp steering gear in vise and unscrew tie rod.
To determine the center position on the rack.
Installing
- Install in reverse order of removal.
Tightening torque
Tie rod to steering gear: 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
Installing boot
- Check boot for wear (cuts, cracks) and make sure sealing surfaces are clean.
- Turn tie rod so that tie rod end shank is in installation position and install boot.
Note: Only use original equipment type clamps.
- Tighten clamp using VAG1275 pliers.
- Install power steering gear.
