Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair


Valve stem seals, removing and installing
(with cylinder head installed)
Special tools and equipment





^ VAG 1331 Torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm)
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench (40 to 200 Nm)
^ 3122B Spark plug wrench
^ 3364 Puller
^ VW 653/3 Pressure hose
^ 3362 Valve spring compressor and press piece 3362/1

Removing
- Remove camshafts, Refer to Camshafts, Lifters and Push Rods.
- Remove hydraulic lifters and place them contact surface downward.

Note: Make sure that the lifters do not become interchanged.

- Remove spark plugs with spark plug wrench 3122B.
- Set piston of appropriate cylinder to "Bottom Dead Center".
- Screw pressure hose VW 653/3 into spark plug thread.





- Mount installation tool 3362 on cylinder head with securing bolts.
- Position installation tool for compressing valve springs to one of the following positions:
Outer intake valves: lower position
Center intake valve: upper position
Exhaust valve: lower position
- Connect pressure hose to compressed air system supplying at least 6 bar and remove valve springs.





- Pull off valve stem seals with 3364.

Installing





- Place plastic sleeve supplied on appropriate valve stem.

Note: The plastic sleeve will prevent the new valve stem seal from being damaged.

- Place new valve stem seal in installation tool 3365.
- Oil valve stem seal sealing lip and press carefully onto valve guide.

Note: The remaining assembly is basically a reverse of the disassembly sequence.
