Power steering gear, removing and installing
Special tools required
VAG 1907 3094
Removing
- Remove battery.
- Remove driver's side stowage compartment.
- Bring steering wheel to center position.
- Remove ignition key with steering wheel in center position.
- Move steering wheel slightly and engage steering lock.
Note:
^ If the steering wheel is turned uncontrollably when the steering gear is removed, the airbag spiral spring can be overwound and damaged.
^ Secure steering column from separating.
- Remove nut -1- on steering universal joint.
- Relieve tension on eccentric by turning tensioning bolt (Torx T50) clockwise. Remove bolt.
- Swing universal joint away downward.
- Clamp off suction and return lines with hose clamps 3094 or equivalent.
- Remove front wheels.
- Unscrew bolts -3- and -4-.
- Pull out tie rod.
- Unscrew nut (arrow).
- Pry out clips and remove cover.
- Place oil tray under vehicle.
- Unscrew return line (22 mm AF) banjo bolts on steering gear.
- Unscrew pressure hose (19 mm AF) banjo bolt on steering gear.
- Remove steering gear mounting bolts -1-, -2- and -3-.
- Remove steering gear through left-hand wheel housing (second technician required).
Installing
Before installation the steering gear must be centralized with VAG 1907:
Note: It is also possible to centralize an installed steering gear but the access to do so is limited.
- Remove socket head bolt -1- on steering gear.
- Move rack until center marking on rack (arrow) and threaded hole -2- align.
- Thread in VAG 1907
- Position steering gear on plenum chamber.
Note: Ensure that the threads and bolt contact surfaces are free of oil and grease.
- Insert bolts -1- and -2- but do not tighten.
- Install bolt -3- and tighten to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten bolts -1- and -2- to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).
- Install return hose and tighten banjo bolt (22 mm AF) to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
- Install pressure hose and tighten banjo bolt (19 mm AF) to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- Remove tool VAG 1907 from steering gear.

- Seal steering gear with socket head bolt -1-.
Tightening torque: 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
- Join steering universal joint to steering gear pinion.
- Remove steering column assembly aid.
- Insert tensioning bolt (Torx T50) and tension counter-clockwise.
- Tighten nut to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- Install driver's side stowage compartment.
- Install wheel housing cover.
- When steering gear is completely installed remove hose clamps 3094 or equivalent
- Switch ignition off.
- Install and connect battery and enter code for radio, if necessary.
- Check hydraulic fluid level. Refer to Power Steering Fluid; Testing and Inspection.
- Check steering system for leaks. Refer to Power Steering Fluid; Testing and Inspection.
- Bleed steering system. Refer to Power Steering Fluid; Service and Repair.
- Check toe adjustment. Refer to Alignment.
