Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair
Steering lock housing, removing and installing
Requirements
^ Steering wheel and airbag unit removed.
^ Upper and lower steering column trim removed.
Removing
- Remove bolt for steering column switch and remove steering column switch.
- Remove plastic cover over shear bolts.
- Drill out shear bolts or drive heads off using a chisel -1-
The ignition key locking cable must also be unhooked on vehicles with an automatic transmission.
Removing and installing ignition switch/lock cylinder. Refer to Starting and Charging.
Installing
- Reconnect connector for ignition/starter switch.
- Attach ignition key removal lock cable if necessary (only vehicles with automatic transmission).
- Install new shear bolts.
- Tighten shear bolts until head shears off.
Complete installation procedure by following in reverse order of removal.
