Readiness Code, Generating

Special tools, test equipment and auxiliary items






- V.A.G 1788/10 Engine speed adjuster
- V.A.G 1551 scan tool (or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552) with cable V.A.G 1551/3B

Test conditions
- Vehicle stationary
- The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V
- On vehicles with automatic gearbox selector lever in "P" or "N" position
- All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window heating must be switched off
- Coolant temperature must be 5-95 °C, see display group 04, display zone 3
- Intake air temperature less than 60 °C, see display group 04, display zone 4

Work sequence
- Connect the scan tools V.A.G 1551 or 1552. Then switch ignition on and select engine control module with the "Address word" 01. Connecting scan tool and selecting engine control module. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Work step 1: Check DTC memory

Indicated on display

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX

- Press keys 0 and 2 for function "Check DTC memory" and confirm entry with Q key.

The number of DTCs stored or "No DTC recognized!" will be shown on the display.

x DTC recognized!

If a DTC is stored:
- Repair malfunctions printed out as DTCs using Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table:
- SAE P0 codes. P Code Charts
- SAE P1 codes. P Code Charts

If no DTC is stored:
- Press -> key.

Work step 2: Erase DTC memory

Indicated on display

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX

- Press keys 0 and 5 for the function "Erase DTC memory" and confirm entry with Q key.

NOTE: The readiness code is reset or erased each time DTC memory is erased.

Indicated on display

Rapid data transfer ->
DTC memory is erased

NOTE: If the ignition is switched off between "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory" the DTC memory will not be erased.

- Press -> key.

Work step 3: matching the throttle valve control module to the engine control module

- Press keys 0 and 4 for the function "Basic Setting" and confirm entry with Q key.

Input display group number XXX

- Press keys 0, 6 and 0 for the "Display group number 60" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display (1-4 = Display zones)

- Check the specifications in display zone 3 and 4:

Display Group 60:






- Terminate engine basic setting at earliest after 30 seconds by pressing the -> key.

Work step: 4

- Start engine and run at idle speed.

NOTE: Engine must not be switched again off during work sequence.

Work step 5: oxygen sensor aging diagnosis (probe dynamics)

- Press keys 0 and 4 for the "Basic Setting" function and confirm entry with Q key.

- Press keys 0, 3 and 4 for "Display group number 34" and confirm entry with Q key.

- Check specifications in display zones 1-4.

If the diagnostic is initiated from engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.

Work step 6: catalyst diagnosis

NOTE: The diagnosis will only be terminated if the oxygen sensor aging diagnosis is first successfully completed.

- Press keys 0, 4 and 6 for "Display group number 46" and confirm entry with Q key.

System in basic setting 46 ->

- Set an engine speed of 2280-2760 RPM with speed regulator V.A.G 1788/10:
- Check catalyst conversion (amplitude condition) in display zone 3:

Specifications:
- Manual gearbox = max. 0.40
- Automatic transmission = max. 0.33

- Maintain the engine speed at 2280-2760 RPM until the catalyst temperature in display zone 2 increases to above 400 °C.

If the diagnosis is initiated from engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."

NOTE: This process can take a few minutes.

Display Group 46:






If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove the engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the display indicates as described:
- Remove the engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Press C key.

Work step 7: secondary air system diagnosis

NOTE: The diagnosis will only be terminated if the oxygen sensor aging diagnosis is first successfully completed.

- Press keys 0, 7 and 7 for the "Display group number 77" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display (1-4 = Display zones)

System in basic setting 77 ->

- Allow engine to run at idle speed until specification: "Syst. OK." is displayed in display zone 4.

If the diagnosis is initiated from engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."

Display Group 77:






If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.

Work step 8: activated charcoal filter system diagnosis (tank venting system)

NOTE: The engine must not be loaded during this diagnosis because the diagnosis will be interrupted and will not be started again until the engine is revved-up.

- Press keys 0, 7 and 0 for "Display group number 70" and confirm entry with Q key.

- Allow engine to run at idle speed until specification: "TBV OK." is displayed in display zone 4.

If the diagnosis is initiated from engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."

Display Group 70:






If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the display indicates as described:
- Press key 3 (V.A.G 1551) or key (Uparrow) (V.A.G 1552).

Indicated on display (1-4 = Display zones)

System in basic setting 71 ->
1 2 3 4

- Allow engine to run at idle speed until specification: "Syst. OK." is displayed in display zone 4.

If "Reed op." appears:
- Open fuel tank cap briefly to allow pressure in fuel tank to dissipate, this will close the reed contact.

If the diagnostic is initiated from engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."

Display Group 71:






If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the display indicates as described:
- Press -> key.
- Press keys 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q key.
- Switch off ignition.
