A/T - Delayed Shift On Cold Start Up (Normal)
ConditionDelayed Shift on Cold Start Warm-up
Vehicle exhibits, delayed up shifts under part load after a cold start.
37 07 06 Jan. 25, 2007, 2002472, Supersedes Technical Bulletin Group 37 number 98-04 dated November 23, 1998 due to inclusion into ElsaWeb.
Technical Background
A warm-up program determines this shift characteristic and is activated when the following conditions apply:
- Fresh start of engine
- Coolant temperature below 40 degree C (104 degree F)
Tip: The warm-up program lasts for approximately 40 seconds after shifting into drive and vehicle is moving under the above conditions.
During this period, the program holds the shift points to approximately 3000 RPM (shifting at this RPM may be observed by the driver as harsh).
Production Solution
No production change required.
Service
Condition is normal. No repairs are necessary.
Explain the technical facts to customers inquiring about the different shift points.
By raising the shift points, the emission warm-up phase is reduced and the catalyst is heated faster for improved efficiency and better emissions performance.
Tip:
Verifying activation of warm-up program can be accomplished as follows:
- VAG 1551, VAS 5051, VAS 5052 Scan Tool connected
- Fresh start of engine
- Coolant temperature below 40 degree C (104 degree F)
Tip: Verification process must be completed within the first 40 seconds after vehicle is driven and water temperature is below 40 degree C (104 degree F).
- Start vehicle.
- Select 02 "Transmission electronics"
- Select "011 - Measured values" function.
- Enter measure value block 002.
4 display fields always appear in the measured value block (in physical values if necessary).
- Apply brake pedal.
- Shift vehicle into drive.
- Drive vehicle away while second Technician observes value in display field 1 "Dynamic shift program index".
A value of 241 will be displayed in field 1. After 40 seconds or if coolant temperature exceeds 40 degree C (104 degree F) the value will change from 241 to a lower value.
Tip: When placed in Park, value will return to 241.
Verification process is complete.
