Subject: Secure Shift Lock Cable (BW)
Model(s): 1998 Volkswagen New Beetle Vehicles with Automatic Transmission
Condition
The shift lock could become damaged in automatic transmission vehicle within VIN range 3VW_B61C_WM000320 to 3VW_B61C_WM025424. A damaged cable could cause blockage of the shift lever so that it cannot be moved from "Park" position into "Reverse" or "Drive".
Service
Install a protective tube, part number N 102 930 01, over the cable and properly reposition the cable. Correct vehicle in inventory prior to their sale. Correct already sold vehicles during the next scheduled maintenance or repair service as follows:
- Open hood, raise battery cover and disconnect negative (-) battery cable from battery.
- Pull up parking brake lever, use screwdriver to disengage trim around lever and remove trim by pulling forward.
- Remove gear selector handle by sliding sleeve -A- of selector handle down, depress knob -B- on handle end and lift handle off.
- Remove gear sift cover by prying up at -C-
- Remove cupholders -D- by turning counterclockwise to access screws underneath - remove screws
- Remove Screw at -E-
- Lift console cover (unsnap from center console) disconnect electrical accessory plug connector and remove center console cover.
- Remove screws -F- then remove tray
- Remove screw covers -G- and remove screws on both sides of center console.
- Remove (2) screws -H- at front and rear of center console; raise rear of console and pull console back and upward over gear shift lever and out of vehicle.
- Lift cable out of groove (arrow)
- Install protective tube -A-, part number N 102 930 01
- Center tube to groove and secure both ends of tube with tape.
NOTE: After inserting cable into groove, ensure that console screws do not interface with plastic tube.
- Reinstall center console, console cover, gear shift cover, gear shift handle and reconnect ground (-) cable to battery.
- Reset clock and activate radio with code
- Reset the power window pinch protection by inserting key in driver's door, and lowering then raising the door window. Quickly turn key two times to lock position.
- Using the VAG1551 set throttle adaptation as follows:
NOTE: for gasoline vehicle only
- Plug 1551 into vehicle under dash on driver's side turn ignition to "ON" position.
- Enter 01 then push Q button
- Enter 02 then push Q button
- Clear any faults present
- Push arrow button
- Enter 04 then push Q button
- Enter 060 then push Q button
- Wait a minimum of 30 seconds before pressing the arrow button
- press the arrow button to exit
- Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position and remove VAG1551
