Flywheel: Service and Repair

Driveplate, removing and installing

Special tools and equipment
^ 3242 crankshaft holder
^ Depth gauge
^ VAG1331 torque wrench (5 - 50 Nm)
^ VAG1332 torque wrench (40 - 200 Nm)

Removing
- Remove sealing plug on left side of cylinder block.
- Position crankshaft to TDC No. 3 cylinder.

The crankshaft TDC drilling must be visible (or able to be felt) through the sealing plug hole.





- Screw 3242 crankshaft holder into opening so crankshaft is secured.





- Mark position of shim -1-, driveplate and washer -2- to crankshaft.
- Loosen driveplate securing bolts diagonally and remove.
- Remove driveplate.

Installing
- Install driveplate with shim -1- and washer -2- onto crankshaft.
- Insert at least 3 old bolts and tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).





- Check dimension -a- at three points and calculate average.
Specification: approx. 12.3 mm (0.484 inch)

If the specifications are exceeded or not obtained:
- Remove driveplate again and install appropriate shim -11,

Note: Only one shim of the appropriate thickness may be used.

If the specification is attained:
- Insert new securing bolts and tighten by hand.
- Tighten securing bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) and 1/4 turn (90°) further. (Additional 1/4 turn can be done in several steps)
