Valve Timing, Checking
Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items:- 2065A Setting bar
- 2064 Pin
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench 5 to 50 Nm (3.7 to 37 ft lb)
Procedure:
- Remove upper toothed belt guard and cylinder head cover.
- Check toothed belt tension.
- Set engine to TDC for No. 1 cylinder (arrow).
Setting bar (2065A) must fit into camshaft slot.
If the setting bar does not fit, adjust valve timing as follows:
- Rotate camshaft so that setting bar can be inserted.
- Centralize setting bar as follows:
- Turn camshaft so that one end of setting bar contacts the cylinder head.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the gap at the other end of the setting bar.
- Place a feeler gauge equal to half that gap between the setting bar and cylinder head.
- Turn camshaft until the setting bar contacts the feeler gauge.
- Place a 2nd feeler gauge of same thickness at the other side between the setting bar and cylinder head.
- Loosen camshaft sprocket mounting bolt a half turn.
- Place a drift through hole in the rear of the toothed belt guard and release the camshaft sprocket from camshaft taper with a careful tap from a hammer.
- Lock injection pump sprocket using pin 2064.
- Check crankshaft TDC setting. TDC mark on flywheel and mark on flywheel housing must align (arrow). If markings do not align, set crankshaft to TDC for cylinder No. 1.
- Remove locking pin.
- Tighten camshaft sprocket mounting bolt to 45 Nm (33 ft lb).
- Remove setting bar.
- Dynamically check start of injection.
- Erase DTC memory and create readiness code.
