Brake Shoe: Service and Repair






Component Notes And Information

NOTE: During removal and installation procedures, refer to the component location illustration above and component notes below.

1 Spring plate
- To remove push against the spring and turn through 90°
2 Spring
3 Brake shoe with lever for parking brake
4 Upper return spring
- Unhook with pliers
5 Lower return spring
- Lubricate contact points with G6, or equivalent, grease
6 Wedge spring
7 Brake shoe
- Minimum lining thickness: 2.5 mm
8 Cap
- Remove to check brake lining thickness
9 Tensioning pin
10 Wheel speed sensor
- Used only on models with ABS
11 Backing plate
12 Socket-head bolt
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
13 Wheel cylinder
- Checking for leaks. Testing and Inspection
14 Adjusting wedge
- To remove or install the brake drum, push upwards through a wheel bolt hole.
15 Push rod
- Lubricate contact points with G6, or equivalent, grease
16 Locating spring
- Unhook with pliers


Removal
1. Remove brake drum.
2. Remove spring retainers (1).
3. Unhook lower return spring (5).
4. Remove brake shoes.
5. Unhook parking brake cable.
6. Clamp brake shoes in vise.

Wedge Spring Removing:





7. Remove wedge spring (right arrow) and upper return spring (left arrow).

Locating Spring Removing:





8. Unhook locating spring (arrow).

Installation

Locating Spring And Adjusting Wedge Installing:





1. Connect locating spring and insert brake shoe into slot in push rod.
2. Insert wedge.

Bake Shoes Assemble:





3. Insert brake shoe with brake lever in push rod.
4. Connect upper return spring.
5. Connect parking brake cable to brake lever.
6. Place brake shoes on wheel cylinder pistons.
7. Connect lower return spring and install brake shoes onto lower support.
8. Install wedge spring.
9. Install springs and retainers.
10. Install brake drum and adjust wheel bearing play. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
11. Depress brake pedal firmly one time to set self-adjusting mechanism.
