Replacement
NOTE:^ Before replacing clutch cable, check operation
^ Observe general repair instructions.
^ Lubricate all bearings and friction surfaces with MoS2 grease.
WARNING: Always replace self-locking nuts and circlips during repairs.
CAUTION: Before working on pedal cluster:
^ Obtain security code for anti-theft radio.
^ Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.

1 Clutch cable
- Vehicles with gasoline spark-ignition engine only

- Bracket -7- to threaded studs on mounting plate
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
- Always replace
10 Attachment bolts, bracket to assembly support
- Bracket -7- to support
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
11 Pivot pin for clutch pedal and brake pedal
- Installation position, refer to Fig. 1 below.

Fig. 2 Balance Weight On Clutch Release Lever
- Beginning August, 1993, a balance weight will be attached to the clutch release lever in cases where excessive noise and vibration are transferred to the clutch pedal.
- The 200 gram balance weight installed on vehicles with 1.9 liter Diesel engine (up to August 1993) is discontinued.
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
NOTE: The new balance weight can be installed on current vehicles where necessary to address complaints about clutch pedal noise and vibration.
REMOVAL
- Disconnect clutch cable from transmission, refer to Cable Replacement. Service and Repair
- Remove interior trim panel at lower left driver's side, refer to Body and Frame.
- Remove guard plate from between relay panel and pedal cluster as follows:
- Remove electrical wires from retainers -arrow 1-.
- Press snap detent -arrow 2- toward pedal cluster.
- Press guard plate up toward instrument panel -arrow 3- until it can be removed from its retainers.
- Remove guard plate from below, working carefully to avoid damage to wiring.
- Insert screwdriver between steering column and clutch pedal and press it against over-center spring.
- Depress clutch pedal and disconnect over-center spring from pedal in direction indicated by arrow.
INSTALLATION
- Install spring in reverse order of removal, and note the following:
- Install relay panel in left-hand side retainer before installing over-center spring.
- Pull clutch pedal back into passenger compartment.
- Guide over-center spring between pedal and relay panel holder until it is in bracket -arrow 1- while being pressed below clutch pedal support -arrow 2-.
- Press over-center spring onto pedal support, depressing clutch pedal slightly if necessary.
NOTE:
^ If clutch pedal operation is noisy (squeaks), lightly lubricate the spring contact points with lithium grease, refer to arrows -1- and -2- in illustration above.
^ If the noise persists, also lubricate the internal sliding surfaces of the spring.
