Subject: 1994 Model Volkswagen Jetta Vehicles Install Door Opening Protective Edge Cover

Dear Volkswagen Dealer:

This is to inform you of the initiation of a voluntary safety recall campaign for 1994 model Volkswagen Wolfsburg production Jetta vehicles equipped with electrically operated windows. This recall pertains to the installation of a protective cover to the rear door inner shell opening.

Defect Description

It is possible that some of the rear door inner sheet metal panels for the routing of the electrical window regulator switch wiring may have sharp edges and could damage the insulation of the wiring harness.

Vehicle Identification Number Range

The vehicles affected are within the following vehicle identification number range:





Please note that the above VINs represent the lowest and highest serial numbers of affected vehicles. Use of the V-Crest campaign inquiry system will allow you to determine whether or not a particular vehicle, within the above VIN range, requires the corrective work.

Remedial Action

Install a protective cover to both rear door inner shell openings.

Important: Please Provide A copy To All Personnel With Recall-Related Responsibilities!

Owner Notification Mailing

Volkswagen will mail first class notification letters to all known owners of affected vehicles beginning on or about November 20,1996. A copy of the owner letter is included in this circular.

Vehicle Allocation

By separate mail and prior to owner notification, we will furnish you a computer list containing information for vehicles and owners located within your area of responsibility.

Work Procedure

JETTA - Install Protective Edge Cover





^ Ensure clean working conditions

^ Open right rear door

^ Cover rear seat with protective cloth

^ Remove trim cover from door handle by using a small flathead screwdriver





^ Remove upper and lower screws from handle

^ Remove handle





^ Remove fastening screws holding door panel





^ Remove electrical window switch by using a small screw driver and slightly pressing down the plastic lock in back of trim edge

^ Pull out switch and disconnect from harness

^ Remove door-locking knob





^ Loosen inside door latch handle/housing trim and remove

^ Remove latch handle/housing

Note:Do Not Bend Rod.





^ Carefully pry up window rail molding (see Arrow) together with door panel and remove door panel





CAUTION: Put protective cloth underneath plastic tool or screwdriver. DO NOT use force - panel can break!





^ Partially remove sound absorber (shower curtain) to gain access to window regulator switch opening in door shell

CAUTION: DO NOT damage sound absorber.

NOTE: If outside temperature is below 50°, warm up adhesive area with a suitable heat blower prior to removing the sound absorber

^ Check window regulator switch wiring harness for any damage

^ Insulate, if necessary





^ Install protective edge cover, part number IHO 971 905L, by pushing over wiring harness and snapping into door shell opening

Tab must show to top ( arrow shown)





^ Reinstall sound absorber by pulling sound absorber tight and affixing to door, properly lining up with door- panel-attachment holes





^ Use roller from previously supplied (SW Campaign) special tool kit, part number KL 3397, and roll over edges of sound absorber (adhesive area) to ensure tight fit

^ Close door and rinse water down outside of window

^ Check sound absorber for inside water leaks

^ Reinstall panel clips and secure by pushing in pins

Reinstall door panel by:

- Checking foam frame for door handle housing in back of door panel for proper seating

- Pulling electrical switch harness through door panel switch opening

- Carefully reinstalling door panel starting with window rail

- Ensuring proper panel alignment with door clips, installing two upper fastening screws

- Rechecking panel alignment

- Installing remaining fastening screws and tightening

- Reinstalling electrical switch

- Reinstalling door handle

- Reinstalling door handle / housing

- Ensuring that door parts are wiped clean

Repeating procedure for left-side rear door

We will automatically ship to you an initial supply of the following parts:





Additional required parts must be ordered by you from your facing parts depot. Please refrain from over-ordering any of these parts; you may be required to return excess inventory.

Replacement Time / Reimbursement

To ensure proper payment, be sure to enter the correct reimbursement data into the system only for VINs showing a TN code in the V-Crest system.





TN Data Entry Procedure

The system automatically eaters the labor and part numbers applicable to the above listed reimbursement code.

For vehicles which, according to your information are unreachable, please enter into the system one of the codes indicated below, as applicable:





Should a customer inquire about possible reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred for a previous repair to the rear door wiring harness, please instruct the customer to make a copy of the repair order and mail the original together with a cover note to:

Dealer Obligation

To ensure customer satisfaction, as well as minimize inconvenience, dealers are urged to service each vehicle at the scheduled service appointment time and make sure that each vehicle is returned to the customer washed and cleaned inside. Do not let customers wait longer than necessary during service of the vehicle. Every effort should be made to reduce inconvenience to customers.

Dealers are to service each vehicle subject to this recall regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or selling dealer, from this time forward.
