1. Disconnect battery ground cable and cover negative terminal during work on airbag unit.
2. Disconnect RED voltage supply connector marked ``airbag'', located behind instrument panel, then wait 20 minutes for airbag system capacitor to discharge prior to performing any service on system.
3. Remove airbag unit, refer to AIRBAG UNIT.
4. Remove steering wheel, refer to Steering and Suspension/Steering/Steering Wheel/Service and Repair.
5. Remove knee bar panel, then the steering column lower trim.
6. Disconnect electrical connectors 1 and 2, Fig. 4.
7. Remove three screws, Fig. 5, then remove spiral spring from column.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Replacement spring assemblies include a ``locking piece,'' Fig. 6, designed to lock assembly in its center position, prior to installation. Locking piece must be removed prior to installation of new spring assembly.
b. center spiral spring (four turns from ``stop'' in either direction).
